After a decade of being involved in supporting breastfeeding families, it became clear to me, that many breastfeeding challenges were unresponsive to usual lactation consulting strategies. Many mothers were trying their best with a baby that was not capable of effective breastfeeding (no matter which breastfeeding position was implemented).
I had established a tongue and lip tie clinic (at Baby Steps Health Centre) alongside a GP, and while proud of the level of care this service offered (many babies were able have tongue tie professionally assessed and affordably treated), I also felt for the other babies with issues that were not tongue tie related (eg. tight jaws, uncoordinated suck, strong suck). It was clear that something else was needed to help these babies, Western Medicine did not have the answers.
During the course of working for Breastfeeding conferences, assisting with and attending multiple conferences around Australia and NZ, I got to meet some pioneers in the breastfeeding world who were at the cutting edge of breastfeeding support. IBCLC and Craniosacral therapist Alison Hazelbaker opened my eyes to the idea of combining this holistic, gentle therapy with lactation support. I decided to try the treatment myself and found it profoundly relaxing and gentle balancing. I travelled to Melbourne over a two year period to complete the diploma course with Body Intelligence.
I am so excited to be able to offer this unique service to breastfeeding families in Perth. While it is a relatively new concept to many, it is gentle, non manipulative and babies tend to respond really quickly to it. Those willing to take the leap to try it, may find that it is like nothing else! I do believe that it has the potential to help babies function much better at the breast, aswell as helping babies to feel more comfortable in their bodies (after 9 months in a confined space and for many a traumatic entrance into the world). I wish I had know about this therapy ten years ago, while doing my best to cope with my own unsettled baby! Happier babies, after all, lead to happier families.
