If you don't use it, you lose it!!

Have you heard that with the new Support at Home funding system, you can no longer save up large amounts of unspent funds? If you don't use most of your funding, it will simply return to the system.

So what does this mean for you? And how do you make sure you are getting the most out of the funding you have been allocated?

A few questions to ask;
• How often does my coordinator check in with me to see if I need more services or equipment?
• Does my coordinator actively suggest ideas outside the standard cleaning and personal care?
• Are they confident explaining what else the package can cover so I don't miss out?

Less contact usually means less funding being used, which can mean less support for you. You can't possibly know everything yourself, so having a helpful and knowledgeable coordinator makes a huge difference.

For ideas on how to use your package to stay independent at home, visit https://localguardians.com/what-can-home-care-package-funds-be-used-for/ or call me on 0469 373 975

What can Support at Home funding be used for? Every day we get asked ‘What can Support at Home funding be used for?’ It’s a valid and important question so let’s start by taking a look at the intent of the Support at Home Program. The Support at Home Program provides coordinated care and ser...

A little reality check about inconsistent care...

Your carer turns up late because their last five visits ran over. You miss your GP appointment. You wait. You reschedule. You pay for another trip next time. No reimbursement. No accountability.

A new carer arrives who does not know you, your routines, your home or your cultural preferences. You spend half the visit explaining instead of receiving support. Next week it happens again with another new face. More explaining. More correcting. More frustration.

Good care should never feel like hard work for you.

If you stop and think about it, the real cost of inconsistent care adds up every single week. Reliable, culturally aware carers who know you well are not a luxury, they are essential to safe and supportive services.

I want to say this loud and clear for anyone in the back...There is no such thing as being too financial to apply for Support at Home!!!

After my recent talk at a senior citizen group, a bunch of self-funded retirees wandered up to me saying they never thought they would qualify for help. I hear this all the time and it is simply not true.

If you are over 65 and have assessed care needs, you could qualify. You could be a billionaire and you would still qualify!! What does change is the level of discount you get on each service. The good news is everyone receives free clinical services.

So please do not rule yourself out. If support will help you stay independent at home, call My Aged Care and book your assessment 1800 200 422

“Client Choice” sounds nice - But does it actually feel that way?

We hear phrases like “client choice” and “person-centred care” all the time.
But when someone new shows up at your door, does it really feel that way?
Did you get to choose that person, and do they actually know you?

Let’s look at what “choose your carer” really means in practice 👇

Example: Mrs Smith
Mrs Smith built a lovely relationship with her favourite carer, Amy, over many years.
When Amy started her own care business, Mrs Smith chose to keep working with her directly.

Together they agreed on an hourly rate that gave Mrs Smith more hours than through a traditional provider.
Now, only Amy arrives at her door, and they communicate directly about everything she needs.

Mrs Smith also brought on her local gardener who's been doing their street for years at a cheap rate and her families long-time cleaner - people who already knew her home, her pets, and her routines.

The result? A small “dream team” who truly know her - and her care hours go much further.

Want consistency and no strangers at the door? Let’s chat about how your Home Care Package can make that happen.

The Reality of Inconsistent Care - What's it really costing you? 💲

Your care worker turns up late because their previous five clients ran behind schedule.
You’ve now missed your appointment.

After waiting half an hour, you’re forced to reschedule - and pay another carer to take you next time. You’re not reimbursed, because that’s considered “standard practice” when schedules are tied to hundreds of clients.

You then spend another 30 minutes on hold trying to reach your care advisor or rostering team.

When the carer finally arrives - a new face you’ve never met - you ask them to clean to fill in the time.
They don’t know where your cleaning products are, how you like things done, or that in your culture you remove shoes at the door. So you spend half the visit explaining everything before they even start.

Next week, another new person arrives.
And you start all over again.

Think about it - how much is it really costing you, week after week, not having consistent, culturally aware, reliable carers who actually know your routines and values?

With Local Guardians, you get a consistent team who truly know you!!

This National Carers Week (12-18 October), we're taking a moment to recognise the incredible dedication of Australia's 3 million unpaid carers, including the many families caring for elderly loved ones.

Caring for an ageing parent, partner, or friend is a role filled with love, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding.

To every carer out there - we see you. 🫶And we're here to support you and your loved ones on this journey.

A huge thank you to the Mill Point Rotary Club for hosting me this morning. Between the stunning views over the golf course and a hearty breakfast to start the day, it’s easy to see why this club has such a strong following.

Not a single person in the room looked a day over 30 😉😉 and with that radiant energy bouncing around, it was an absolute delight to present to such an engaged group.

With over 30 years under its belt, it’s no wonder Mill Point Rotary is such a success story - it seems to be a wonderful club to be part of. 🌟

Friday 3 October:
Come and listen to Laura Turner, a Care Advisor with Local Guardians, an organisation which delivers Self Managed Home Care Packages. This is a government-subsided program that provides a range of services and support for older Australians who wish to continue living at home.
