Morning routines that seem to carry on endlessly often signal more than just dawdling or defiance. Genuine challenges with sequencing tasks, processing sensory input from clothing and grooming, or managing the executive function skills needed to independently move through a sequence of steps could be the underlying cause.

When a child consistently struggles with daily tasks like getting dressed, eating breakfast, or preparing their bag for the day ahead, it's worth exploring whether motor planning difficulties, sensory sensitivities, or attention regulation are creating genuine barriers. An occupational therapist can assess what appears to be behavioural defiance, and provide strategies that aim to transform chaotic mornings into smoother, more predictable routines.

If your child often avoids or rushes through using playground equipment intended for climbing, swinging, or balancing, and also finds handwriting difficult, this could be more than a coincidence.

Playground equipment provides children with opportunities to further develop their gross motor skills through climbing, swinging, and balancing. These activities can directly support foundational abilities in building core strength, improving postural control and body awareness required for sitting at a desk, and developing bilateral coordination and fine motor control needed for handwriting. If your child resists active play and finds fine motor activities challenging in class, this may be more than a coincidence.

Occupational therapy can assess and may support your child to develop their physical abilities and fine motor skills to achieve different academic outcomes.

When children constantly comment about being bored, they believe there is no suitable activity to do. They may be experiencing difficulties in underlying areas that affect their self-regulation, sensory needs, or executive functioning.

Occupational therapy helps identify what's really happening beneath that "I'm bored" statements, and can help you determine whether your child identifies and responds to their own body's internal signals, if they need more or less sensory input to participate, or if they require support to start or break down activities.
