⚡️Every healthy cell maintains an electrical charge across its membrane — often around −70 millivolts. This tiny voltage helps regulate how nutrients move into cells, how waste is removed, how cells communicate, and how energy is produced.
Inside the cell, mitochondria maintain an even stronger electrical gradient (roughly −150 to −180 mV) that powers the production of ATP — the energy currency of life.
Without these electrical gradients, cells struggle to produce energy efficiently.
Some researchers and integrative physicians have explored the idea that illness may involve a loss of cellular energy or electrical signalling. One example is the work of Jerry Tennant, who proposed an electrical model of health in his book Healing Is Voltage.
While not all aspects of this model are universally accepted, it raises an interesting question:
If healthy cells depend on electrical gradients…
how much of healing involves restoring the body’s energy systems?
At FIHA we look at the terrain — the internal environment that supports healthy cellular function.
Things like:
• nutrient status
• toxin load
• mineral balance
• mitochondrial health
• inflammation and stress
Many of these factors can be explored through functional medicine testing rather than guesswork.
Because when we understand the terrain, we gain clues about why the body may be struggling — and how to support it.
Curiosity is where many discoveries begin.
