Lately, I’ve been sitting with a question that comes up often in the therapy room:

“Why does this feel harder than I expected?”

It’s usually shared quietly & often with a sense that by now, things should feel more settled or manageable.

But motherhood isn’t just something we adjust to. It’s something that changes us.

Our identity, our relationships, the way we see ourselves, others and the world.. it all shifts, often in ways we’re not prepared for.

This is what we call matrescence.

And it can feel meaningful and expansive, while also disorienting and hard.

If this question has ever crossed your mind, you’re not alone in it.

I’ve been sharing reflections like this in The Growth Notes - a gentle email series and monthly letters for mothers navigating the evolving seasons of motherhood.

If this feels like something you might like, you’re very welcome to join 🌱 Link in bio ✨

Motherhood can be expansive, beautiful, disorienting and overwhelming — sometimes all at once.

In the therapy room, I often sit with mothers who are trying to make sense of these experiences quietly.

The identity shifts.
The invisible load.
The push and pull of loving motherhood and finding it hard.

This is matrescence ✨

I’ve created The Growth Notes as a gentle space to explore these experiences - through reflections grounded in perinatal psychology and inspired by themes I often hear in the therapy room.

When you subscribe, you’ll receive a short introductory email series, followed by monthly Growth Notes exploring the evolving seasons of motherhood.

If this feels like something that might support you, you’re so welcome to join 🌱 link is in bio & also below 👇🏼

When you walk into The Growth Room every detail is intentionally present to help you feel safe, supported, and able to arrive exactly as you are 🫶🏼

A soft rug underfoot (shoes on or off — whatever feels good for you)

Large comfy chairs with plenty of back support

A cushion you can use however you need — behind your back, hugged for comfort, or sometimes tossed aside

Sensory tools (fidgets) if your hands need something to hold

Tissues, because tears are always welcome here

A candle for warmth and grounding

A salt lamp to bring a soft, calming light

Natural light to help create a gentle space for your nervous system

Brown noise softly playing in the background to support grounding and nervous system regulation

A deck of self-love cards if you feel drawn to a moment of reflection

Therapy isn’t just about the conversation. It is about creating a space where your body and mind can feel safe enough to open up.

The Growth Room is here to hold you with whatever you bring into it.

Because becoming a mother changes you & you deserve a space to explore that change with care ✨

Postpartum is often spoken about as something with an endpoint;
a chapter that closes once the baby stage passes.

But matrescence reminds us that becoming a mother is ongoing 🌱 💫

Even as things might look “settled” on the outside, motherhood continues to shape us in quiet and unexpected ways.

You are not behind.

You are not failing.

You are still becoming 💛 ✨

Motherhood can be so consuming that it’s easy to forget yourself in the process.

Accessing support for you isn’t about doing more or being better.

It’s about remembering that you matter too.

If you’re needing support, it doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human, and you were never meant to do this alone 💛

Three years of The Growth Room 🎉💛✨

It’s been another year filled with lots of growth, challenges, honour & gratitude.

While socials would suggest that I have been MIA this calendar year, I have felt more connected to community than ever before & for that I am so, so grateful.

I love connecting with women; supporting them through challenging & at times, equally joyful times.

The stories, courage & strength I witness in the women I support truly inspires me & it is such an honour to provide a collaborative & safe space for healing, discovery & growth.

As I reflect on the last three years, I am filled with immense gratitude. I’ve learned so much & look forward to building on this learning to continue offering a space for preparation, growth & support for women in the perinatal period ✨

We are delighted to welcome Angelina Crea to our national network of perinatal psychologists.

Based in Plenty, VIC, Angelina is a warm and compassionate psychologist who enjoys working collaboratively with clients with a relational and strengths-based approach. Angelina has a special interest in women's health and perinatal psychology; recognising that the perinatal period from preconception through to parenthood can be both incredibly wonderful and challenging.

After becoming a mother herself and experiencing the transformative experience of motherhood; specifically experiencing her second pregnancy and birth during the global pandemic, Angelina recognised the importance for holistic supports for women during this period.

Angelina has trained through the Perinatal Training Centre in Perinatal and Infant Mental Health.

‘Matrescence’ is defined as the process of becoming a mother & is used to describe the physical, psychological, social & emotional changes that a woman goes through during the incredible transformation that is the transition to motherhood.

When we become a mother, everything changes.

It is so important that we acknowledge this transformation to ensure that we allow ourselves space to grow; to both reach out for & accept the right support if we need it, as we navigate these changes.

For me, just learning about matrescence; the fact such a term existed & beginning to reflect on what it meant for me, was & has been transformative in itself.

Because of society’s messages & expectations of mothers, we are often very quickly left feeling like we must be doing motherhood wrong, when in reality we experiencing a profound human experience ✨

Learning about matrescence can offset a period of so much growth for new (or seasoned) mothers who are trying to make sense of this incredible transition ✨

🌼 Did you know about matrescence when you first became a mother?
How did it change your experience of motherhood? 🌱
