Lately, I’ve been sitting with a question that comes up often in the therapy room:
“Why does this feel harder than I expected?”
It’s usually shared quietly & often with a sense that by now, things should feel more settled or manageable.
But motherhood isn’t just something we adjust to. It’s something that changes us.
Our identity, our relationships, the way we see ourselves, others and the world.. it all shifts, often in ways we’re not prepared for.
This is what we call matrescence.
And it can feel meaningful and expansive, while also disorienting and hard.
If this question has ever crossed your mind, you’re not alone in it.
I’ve been sharing reflections like this in The Growth Notes - a gentle email series and monthly letters for mothers navigating the evolving seasons of motherhood.
