Once quadriceps activation is improving, we start reinforcing it through functional movement.

The sit-to-stand is a key early exercise in ACL rehab. It encourages the quads to work through range, promotes symmetrical weight-bearing, and builds confidence loading the knee in a controlled way.

This movement directly translates to everyday tasks like standing up from a chair and is an important step toward restoring normal gait and independence.

After an ACL injury, restoring quadriceps activation is a major priority in rehab.

One key assessment we use in physiotherapy is checking for quadriceps lag — this assesses whether the quad can fully straighten the knee and hold it there against gravity.

Following an ACL injury, quad lag is common due to swelling, pain, and neuromuscular inhibition. When the quads aren’t firing effectively, knee stability and movement control are compromised.

👉 Why this matters: resolving quad lag is essential for returning to normal walking without gait aids, improving knee confidence, and safely progressing through ACL rehab.

After an ACL injury, managing swelling early is a crucial first step in recovery.

Physiotherapy plays a key role in helping the knee settle by using hands-on techniques, such as massage and manual therapy, to assist with fluid movement, reduce stiffness, and improve comfort.

Reducing swelling isn’t just about pain relief — it helps restore movement, improve muscle activation (especially the quads), and sets the foundation for effective rehab and prehab.
