Port Augusta City Council is proud to work alongside Potentia Energy in supporting meaningful programs like this cross-generational initiative. Seeing Stirling North Primary school students spending time with local nursing home residents is a reminder of the strength, warmth, and resilience that defines Port Augusta.

Thank you to the Potentia Energy team for visiting, for your ongoing partnership, and for helping create opportunities that bring joy across generations.

As Mayor Linley Shine shared, “You can hear the excitement in everybody’s voices… Potentia Energy is supporting programs like this and I can't thank them enough.”

The smiles in the room said it all — this is community at its best.

I recently attended a Flinders Ranges & Outback Tourism Industry Engagement Workshop part of the South Australian Tourism Commission’s ongoing work to strengthen how we plan and promote tourism across our region.

The South Australian Tourism Commission, in partnership with RDA Far North and the Flinders Ranges & Outback Tourism Marketing Committee (as the Regional Tourism Organisation), is developing a Destination Management Plan (DMP) for our region. This plan will align with the refreshed South Australian Tourism Plan 2030.

The plan will help guide tourism priorities and aspirations for the Flinders Ranges & Outback, aiming to create positive outcomes that support local people, communities, and places to thrive. It will ensure time and resources are focused where they can make the greatest impact and serve as a valuable tool to advocate for investment in our regional priorities.

For those of us living in and near the Flinders Ranges and Outback, tourism plays a huge role in our local economy. It supports businesses big and small, creates jobs, and brings new energy into our communities.

It’s also wonderful to see the world recognising just how special our region is. The Ikara–Flinders Ranges and Outback was recently named on Lonely Planet’s Hotlist 2026 — the only Australian destination to make the list and ranked fourth in the world! This recognition celebrates our dramatic outback scenery, ancient geological wonders, rich Aboriginal cultural heritage, and the incredible adventure experiences that draw people from all over the world.

The Ikara–Flinders Ranges has more than 600 million years of history, with 350 million years of geology visible in its dramatic landscapes. The World Heritage nomination highlights both this natural wonder and the cultural heritage of the Adnyamathanha people, the land’s traditional custodians. UNESCO are assessing the nomination, and their decision will determine if the region is added to the World Heritage List – this should be announced in 2027. This recognition would boost the Flinders Ranges’ global profile, support local communities, and help protect this remarkable place for the future.

For Port Augusta, this is particularly exciting. Our city is the gateway and crossroads to the Flinders Ranges, Outback, Eyre Peninsula and Spencer Gulf. Many visitors start or end their journeys here — stopping to refuel, rest, or explore our local attractions. With the new Destination Management Plans in place, there will be more opportunities for Port Augusta to play an even bigger role in regional tourism.

It would be wonderful to see new tourism businesses emerge in Port Augusta, making the most of our stunning Spencer Gulf and foreshore areas. There is so much untapped potential for experiences that connect visitors to the water, celebrate our natural surroundings, and showcase local produce and hospitality.

The regional hub - Port Augusta

Port Augusta City Council is located at the head of Spencer Gulf in South Australia and includes Stirling North and the seaside homes located at Commissariat Point, Blanche Harbor and Miranda and has a population of almost 14,000 people. Council acknowledges and respects the traditional owners, their ancestors and the sharing of lands on which Port Augusta is situated.

Called ‘the crossroads of Australia’ because roads from Sydney to Perth and Adelaide to Darwin all pass through Port Augusta. This regional hub, where the Outback meets the ocean, is a major tourism, shopping, government and service centre. Getting to Port Augusta is easy with multiple air services, seven day bus service to and from Adelaide, and The Ghan and Indian Pacific railway service passing through. The city offers a vibrant range of cafés, pubs and restaurants and accommodation.

There are a range of attractions for the whole family including the Wadlata Outback Centre. To get the whole story on the region, creep through the jaws of Max, a giant Ripper lizard, to begin a journey through the Flinders Ranges & Outback’s ‘Tunnel of Time’. There’s the nationally-accredited Port Augusta Visitor Information Centre onsite where you can find out more about the region, and book tours and accommodation.

See an amazing array of arid zone plants and one of Australia’s most significant collections of Eremophilas at the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. Open daily, it is also home to more than 100 native bird species. Stroll through the AridSmart Display Gardens to discover how to create your own native garden. The visitor centre has a café, serving native-flavoured food and regional wines, as well as a gift and garden shop.
