Nominations for the 2026 Agricultural Town of the Year Award are officially open!
This program, delivered by Department of Primary Industries and Regions in partnership with InDaily South Australia, celebrates the towns that excel in agricultural practices and make our regions vibrant places to live and work.
We’re asking all community members to be aware of a recent increase in discarded needles in public areas across town. These items pose a serious health and safety risk to everyone.
Why this matters
Discarded needles can carry blood-borne infections such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Accidental contact, particularly needle stick injuries, can present significant health risks.
What to do if you find a needle
• Do not touch or handle them
• Keep a safe distance and ensure others stay clear
• Report it immediately to Council so trained staff can safely collect it
• If safe to do so, help keep others away from the area
If a needle stick injury occurs
• Allow the wound to bleed gently (do not squeeze)
• Wash the area with soap and water
• Seek medical attention immediately
• Report the incident as soon as possible
If you see a discarded needle, please report it to Council promptly via 8641 9100.

Mayor Shine recently met with Nigel Smart and Rebecca Abley from Crime Stoppers to discuss crime in Port Augusta and explore ways to further enhance and promote the organisation’s work in the community.
Crime Stoppers South Australia is a highly successful not-for-profit program that works alongside the community, media and police to gather intelligence about criminals and illegal activities, helping to solve, reduce and prevent crime.
The message from Crime Stoppers is simple: if you SEE something or HEAR something, then SAY something.
Members of the public can provide information about wanted persons, unsolved crimes or people suspected of being involved in criminal activity. Reports can be made anonymously, and rewards may be available for information that assists investigations.
Crime Stoppers encourages everyone to come forward with what they know, helping make Port Augusta a safer place for all.

Jetties are part of everyday coastal life across South Australia. They’re where families gather, fish are caught, visitors are welcomed, and local businesses and tourism thrive.
But many of our jetties are ageing - and the cost of maintaining them is rising. While councils care deeply for these important community assets, they can’t carry the growing financial burden alone. Without stronger support, some jetties risk falling into disrepair or even closure.
That’s why LGA is calling on the State Government for a fairer, more sustainable approach to funding:
📌 An 80/20 funding partnership (State Government 80%, councils 20%)
📌 An increase in State Government jetty funding from $5 million to $10 million per year
This stronger partnership will help ensure jetties remain safe, open and accessible for everyone who enjoys them.
💙 Add your voice - Sign the pledge and call on the State Government to protect our jetties for future generations, visit https://lga.sa.gov.au/jetties

Port Augusta City Council is planning new mural artwork at Eastside Skatepark, including the steps, seats, and low walls across the site. These improvements will help refresh the space and add colour, energy, and character to the skatepark for everyone to enjoy.
We’re inviting the community to help choose the colour scheme that will guide the final artwork.
Vote for your favourite design:
1. Sunset Purple – bold purples and warm sunset tones
2. Earth & Green – natural greens inspired by landscape and country
3. Coastal Bright – vibrant blues, aquas and energetic highlights
Your feedback will help decide which colour direction is used for the final mural design.
This project is funded by The Benevolent Society and supported by Port Augusta City Council.
