This feels weird! At least at the beginning. Nevertheless, it trains our brains to be present and appreciate food. You certainly can't overeat when you are eating mindfully. The point of this is not to eat like this every time you eat something, just to increase your awareness of eating and not let it be just an automatic behaviour. And to not miss the joy of eating.

Let’s take the scenario of a hectic workday. Without mindfulness, it's easy to get swept up in the chaos, grabbing a fast-food meal without thought, skipping breaks, and becoming more and more stressed.

But with mindfulness, even amidst the hustle, you might pause, take a few deep breaths, and ask,

'What do I truly need right now?'

The answers might surprise you: A nourishing meal, a short walk, a moment of quiet. By being present, you steer your choices towards better health and well-being. And you will find that after meeting that simple need, you will have more clarity to do your work, to create and be more productive, with an internal environment (that is, your mind) of calm and wellbeing.

Now, I’m not saying that being mindful will always lead to what we traditionally deem as the 'perfect' health choices or that you should be mindful all the time. But mindfulness empowers you to make decisions aligned with your genuine needs. To catch yourself when engaging in an automatic behaviour that you would rather not consciously choose and make a choice. Most often, you might want to choose a healthier alternative. But sometimes, you might just need comfort, rest, or even indulgence. And that's okay.

The difference is that with mindfulness, these become conscious choices, not automatic reactions.

Mindfulness is not woo-woo! We can say mindfulness is a form of meditation, although meditation and mindfulness are not equivalent. Mindfulness is more a way of living, or we should aim to make it so. At its core, it's about being fully present and engaged in the current moment without judgment.

The latter part is really important. Mindfulness is focused attention but in a non-judgmental way. It's about cultivating awareness of our thoughts, emotions, sensations, and environment. Instead of getting lost in the past or future, being mindful means being anchored in the here and now but not ignoring the past and the future. Incorporating moments of mindfulness is about a more balanced time perspective, about being more often in the present.
