So many women and men tell me the same story — they finally open up, share their feelings, express a need…
and instead of being heard, they’re met with defensiveness, comparison, or:
“That’s your problem, not mine.”
Here’s the truth most couples don’t realise:
Validation is not agreement.
Validation simply acknowledges your partner’s inner world — even if you see the situation differently.
It sounds like:
• “I get why you feel that way.”
• “I can see how that would upset you.”
• “Thank you for telling me.”
And here’s why it’s essential:
❤️ Vulnerability needs safety.
When someone opens up, they’re taking a risk.
If that moment is met with defensiveness or minimising, the nervous system learns:
“Don’t open up again.”
That’s how emotional intimacy breaks down.
🧩 Defensiveness disconnects.
The moment we defend, we stop listening.
We shift from understanding to proving a point.
We prioritise being right over being close.
🫂 Validation is the bridge back to each other.
You can disagree with the details AND still honour the emotion.
Healthy couples do both every day.
When a partner says, “Your feelings are your problem,” they’re missing the foundation of intimacy.
Yes, our emotions are our responsibility —
but in a relationship, our emotional experiences impact each other.
And they deserve care, curiosity, and compassion.
Most partners aren’t asking for perfection.
They’re asking for:
✨ responsiveness
✨ understanding
✨ a safe place to land
It starts with validation.
Not comparison.
Not defensiveness.
Not dismissing someone’s reality because it’s uncomfortable.
Just simple human connection:
“I hear you. I’m here. Let’s work through this together.”

🎉 Happy 5th Birthday to The Hope Centre Perth! 🎉
(…technically 6 years, but one very meaningful name change along the way 😉)
Today we celebrate another year of growth, healing, and community. None of this would be possible without our incredible clients—past and present—who have trusted us with their stories, their courage, and their hope.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for allowing us to walk alongside you. You are the reason we do what we do, and the reason we get to keep doing it. 💛
Here’s to the next chapter, and to creating even more spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered.
With gratitude,
The Hope Centre Perth team 🦋
