THIS!!

I just finished reading Self-Reg by Dr. Stuart Shanker, and there are a few times he mentioned not mistaking "quiet" for "calm." I thought this was such an important point; how often do we view behaviors as "coming out of no where" or describe a kid as "going from 0 to 60" just because they appeared quiet and compliant prior to exhibiting behaviors? How many stressors and needs for support are we missing when we assume a student is calm and well-regulated just because they are quiet and compliant? Just some food for thought this sunny Sunday ๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ’ก

Children and young people may not have the language skills to communicate their needs. These insights are excellent examples of what may be going on for kids after the school day ends.

Tired? I know I am!

This time of the year is extremely busy, especially for kids. Their feelings are valid, whether theyโ€™re communicating their emotions verbally or through non-verbal cues. Itโ€™s important that we can help kids feel heard and help them regulate.

๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽ„

โ€˜Tis the season for overscheduling, overstimulation, behavioural manipulation via the use of an all-seeing Elf, forced hugs and passing babies around like a parcel. I haven't forgotten the positives of the holiday season, but it is sometimes easy for us to forget the potential negatives for kids at this time of year.โ €
โ €
Overstimulation (which is when a child is swamped by more experiences, sensations, noise and activity than they can cope with) in particular runs rife at this time of year. Kids cannot tolerate the same amount of sensory input that adults can.โ €
โ €
Watch for kids' cues of needing quiet, calm time, whether they're at home, at a social gathering, out looking at Christmas lights, or at their grandparents'. Whining, crying, becoming short-tempered, refusing to do simple tasks, becoming withdrawn and/or telling you that they've had enough, are all signs that your child has probably had enough. Remember, if you see these behaviours, your child is not purposely trying to be difficult, and they need you to take action.โ €
โ €
What can you do? Try not to be tempted to pack each day full of activities. One quality (or even not so quality) outing a day, or spending days at home, is perfectly acceptable.โ €
โ €
If youโ€™re out and about and see signs of overstimulation, try to remove your child from the situation. If thatโ€™s not possible, keep them close to you, ask or gauge whether they need hugs or space, keep them hydrated, well-fed, and give them time to rest. If you're somewhere you can control the environment, you can try moving away from people, keeping lights low, volumes down, and touch input to a minimum. โ €โ €

This Is Not About Me shows us what happens when we judge someone based on what they can or canโ€™t say, and what happens when educators presume competence.

Not speech pathology relatedโ€ฆ I just wanted to give a quick shout-out to some of our local businesses whilst in lockdown.

We have some amazing businesses in our community. If youโ€™re getting some online shopping done during lockdown (guilty!!๐Ÿ›) check these out:

for cute scrunchies and accessories. Great for early Christmas shopping!

for fresh flowers, lovely hampers and gifts. Theyโ€™re still delivering locally. I miss going in and visiting though.

make some incredible polymer clay earrings. I wear mine very regularly and the quality and designs are amazing!

stock an awesome range of clothing and accessories from some of my favourite brands. Definitely my go-to for shopping here in Port! They deliver locally too.

for innovative bees wax wraps and products. I use these everyday for my kids and food saving. I love their snack bags and the range of designs.

have art supply packs and instructional videos for all ages to do something creative while in lockdown. There are soooo many options!

makes cute purses and tote bagsโ€ฆ and sheโ€™s just 16!! Young people are so talented!

make my favourite donuts ๐Ÿฉ Iโ€™ll be ordering some baking supplies from them today (my 8 year old is baking like crazy!).

I could go on all day! We are lucky to have such an awesome range of small businesses in our community.

If you have a favourite local business in your community let me know in the comments!! I would love to see who else is out there doing amazing things โ˜บ๏ธ

I hope everyone is doing their best to stay well in this difficult situation ๐Ÿ’–

With NSW in lockdown from August 14th-21st (at this stage) I will not be seeing clients for face-to-face sessions during this time.

Families will be contacted this week regarding regular sessions. Please be patient while we make adjustments for the current situation. Julie and I are both continuing to work as well as home-schooling our own kids.

When we are supporting kids through difficult times and big emotions, it is important to be able to connect with them to help them feel safe and heard. Finding the right thing to say can be hard. Here are some examples of what we can say, even if we donโ€™t know the direct solution to a problem.

Working with a speech pathologist on this can ensure we deliver these messages in the right way for individual children and families.

Back to school tomorrow ๐Ÿ“š

We are very grateful that regional NSW is continuing with face-to-face learning for our students.

I will continue supporting my clients to reach their literacy goals using Sounds Write, an evidence-based programme which teaches children how the alphabet code works. The programme teaches in simple steps how the sounds of the language are represented by the writing system. As you can see in the quote from Dr Martin Kozloff, this opens up a huge range of words that children will be able to read and spell, not just a set number ๐Ÿค“How good is science?!

I canโ€™t wait to watch my clients grow and develop this term.
