You’ve probably seen the news about Bondi Sands recalling more sunscreen batches due to separation issues - following the Choice report earlier this year that found 16 of 20 tested sunscreens weren’t meeting their SPF claims.

Over 20 products have now been pulled from shelves.

This is the fifth year of the Kostalas Excellence Award at UNSW Medicine. 🎓

We created this award because something was missing. Medical school celebrates the brilliant minds - as it should, because every single one of these students is exceptionally smart.

But we wanted to honour something deeper. The kindness that can’t be graded. The compassion that doesn’t show up on transcripts. The quiet commitment to making other people’s lives better.

The things that actually transform someone from a good student into a great doctor.

This year’s recipient, Jack Nethery, embodies exactly why this award exists. Despite facing extraordinary personal challenges, his instinct is always to ask: how can I help? How can I leave this better than I found it?

From mentoring struggling medical students, to coaching Junior Touch Football, to volunteering at IRONMAN in the medical tent, to rebuilding the Port Medical Society - Jack shows up for this community again and again.

His father taught him to “leave the campsite better than how you found it.” Jack’s closing words capture everything: “I can only hope that in my small capacity over the past two years, I have left this town and community in a slightly better place than how I found it, for it has left me far better than how it found me.”

Jack - you absolutely have. This community and this profession are better because of who you are.

The $3,000 bursary recognises that finishing medical school is financially tough, and students who give so much to their community deserve support.

Congratulations, Jack. We can’t wait to see the doctor you become. 🙌

Another year, another privilege. For years now, I’ve had the honour of interviewing prospective students for UNSW’s rural medicine program, and honestly, it never gets old.

Every interview reminds me why rural medicine matters—these bright, passionate students want to serve communities like ours, bringing world-class care to regional Australia.

I know firsthand what it means to practice medicine in a regional area. The challenges, yes, but more importantly, the incredible relationships you build, the impact you can have, and the fulfillment that comes from truly knowing your community.

Being part of the selection process for UNSW’s rural program means I get to help identify the future doctors who will serve the Mid North Coast. Students who don’t just see rural medicine as a stepping stone, but as a calling.

It’s my way of giving back—investing time in the next generation who will care for our regional communities long after we do.
