These sessions explore how AAC supports participation, connection, and independence across different environments, highlighting practical examples from real people and real contexts.

In the next episode of Start the Chat, we’re opening up a thoughtful conversation about aphasia and the role AAC can play in rebuilding confidence after a stroke.

Chris and Melanie reflect on their conversation with Michael, who began using AAC during rehabilitation after a stroke. What started as support during recovery is now something he calls his “buddy” – there to support when words and remembering things feels harder.

A gentle, honest episode – hear Michael’s story in his words. Coming soon!

When a conversation breaks down, having the right words ready can make all the difference 💬

In this post, we’re looking at how our Super Core and Voco Chat vocabularies in Grid include built-in support for communication repair.

These small supports can make everyday conversations feel calmer, clearer, and more respectful.

What does it really mean to love and be loved, and how can we make space for that through AAC? 💛

Love is one of the many reasons we communicate. It shows up in relationships, interests, routines, memories, and moments of connection. For people who use AAC, having access to love-based language isn’t a “nice to have” - it’s essential to expression, identity, and belonging.

In this blog, Becky, Smartbox's Clinical AAC Specialist, reflects on why love-based language matters, how it supports meaningful connection, and why it deserves intentional space within AAC systems.

We recently had the pleasure of delivering a professional development session on AAC for the team at Amend Rehab .

Supporting communication is about partnership. We work alongside clinicians to build confidence, capability and practical strategies for them to help their clients communicate what they want, when they want, in ways that work best for them.

A big shout-out to our AT Consultant John for leading the session! He shared his expertise on various AAC devices, access methods and software options to help the team personalise support for every individual.

It’s inspiring to work with fellow clinicians who are so dedicated to building their skills and supporting communication rights.

We look forward to future collaborations together!

Sometimes conversations don’t always go smoothly, and that’s a normal part of everyday interaction 💙

In her latest blog, Smartbox's AAC Content Developer and Speech and Language Therapist, Eva, explores why having ways to repair conversation matters, especially for people who use AAC and their communication partners.

Eva shares how Grid vocabularies include built-in tools that support communication repair - helping people ask for repetition, clarify meaning, ask for help, and stay part of the conversation.

The Australian government has announced changes to supports for children with additional developmental needs.

Children aged eight and under with developmental delay and/or autism, with low to moderate support needs will be supported by the new Thriving Kids model, while children with permanent and significant disability remain eligible for supports under the NDIS.

The model focuses on earlier identification and easier access to services which are delivered in everyday settings where children live, learn, and play.
