15/01/2026

With the recent bushfires in Victoria and the changing weather in Sydney, The Federal Health Department has issued a warning in relation to the air quality. There are some recomemndations to follow in this announcement which are included below.

Bushfire smoke is currently impacting air quality across many areas of Australia, including Victoria. Older people and those with chronic illnesses are highly sensitive to smoke and require extra care and protection.

Health monitoring
• Call 000 for breathing trouble or chest pain.
• Monitor for coughing, wheezing or worsening of chronic conditions.
• Ensure older people follow their Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease action plans and have medications ready.
• For non-emergencies, call 1800 Medicare (1800 633 422) for free health advice from a registered nurse, available 24/7.

Manage exposure and air quality
• Stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed when air quality is poor.
• Set air-conditioning units to recirculate; do not use evaporative coolers.
• Use high-efficiency particle air filters in designated rooms with low foot traffic.
• Move all outdoor activities indoors or reschedule them.
• Consider P2/N95 masks for necessary outdoor travel.

Stay informed
• listen to local emergency radio stations
• check the air and water quality in your area
• read enHealth guidance for managing prolonged smoke events from landscape fires

☀️ **Extreme Heat Alert – Please Take Extra Care Today** ☀️
With Sydney temperatures expected to reach 42°C, we’d like to remind our older community members and their families to take extra precautions in this extreme heat.

Hot weather can affect seniors more quickly, so please keep these important tips in mind:

💧 Drink water regularly – Even if you don’t feel thirsty, have small sips often throughout the day.

🏠 Stay inside and keep cool – Remain indoors during the hottest hours. Use air conditioning, fans, or cool damp cloths if needed.

🪟 Close curtains and blinds – This helps keep your home cooler.

👕 Wear light, loose clothing – Natural fabrics like cotton are best.

🥗 Eat light meals – Cold or smaller meals can be easier to manage in the heat.

🧓 Check medications – Some medicines can affect how your body handles heat. Follow your doctor’s advice and seek help if you feel unwell.

📞 Stay connected – Let someone know how you’re feeling, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. Families and neighbours, please check in on older loved ones.

🚑 Know when to get help – Dizziness, confusion, headache, nausea, or weakness are warning signs. Call for medical assistance if symptoms are severe or ongoing.

At St Luke’s Care, your wellbeing is important to us. Please take care, stay cool, and look out for one another today. 💙
