🩸Postpartum Blood Loss

After your baby is born and the placenta comes away from the wall of your uterus, there remains open blood vessels that bleed (this is what causes your postpartum bleeding) Over the next 7–10 days your uterus works hard to contract back down to a pre pregnancy state, shutting off these bleeding vessels. The placental site begins to heal and the bleeding gets less.

It is very normal to bleed on and off for up to 6 weeks postpartum. Here is an outline of what is considered normal during that time.

Week 1 - In the first few days following birth your bleeding will resemble a heavy period (bright red in colour). On day 1, you may soak up to one pad every hour or two. This heavy bleeding will slowly decrease over the next week. This is the perfect time to wear your (designed by my beautiful colleague and friend). Trust me they are amazing!

If you are breastfeeding, you may notice an increase in flow after a feed. As you breastfeed, you release hormones which help your uterus contract back to its pre pregnancy state (how cleaver is the human body!)

It is also common to pass blood clots in the 24hrs following birth. Clots may be golf ball sized or even larger. Over the next few days you should see less of these clots and they should get smaller in size.

Week 2-6 – your loss will continue to diminish in quantity and change from bright red to pink and then to dark brown.

If you are ever concerned about your postpartum blood loss, speak to your care provider.

✨Birth Environment

A safe, secure, warm and undisturbed birth environment = increase in the release of oxytocin and endorphins and a decrease in adrenaline = stronger, more effective contractions = shorter labour.

High levels of oxytocin and endorphins will also naturally ease the pain of contractions, help you bond with your new baby and promote breastfeeding 💕

✨Power of the mind

“Affirmations have the power to positively change the way think and act in our lives. They can change our emotions, alter our behaviours and reassess our beliefs. Ultimately, they can help us to achieve our goals in life and achieve greatness”. - Richard J. Desouza, Clinical Hypnotherapist.
