You know since we opened our doors 8 years ago in Pottsville there has not been a single charity that has asked us for help that we have not backed. We have handed out 100’s of free treatments to support those in need in our local community and will continue to do so as long as we are operational. Without community, without the people that say yes, without kindness the world truly is a crappy place. So, this week a few of these little darlings are off to support some fundraising for those that need a little lift in life.

Ayurvedic Winter Flu Recovery Soup - Warming, immune-boosting, easy to digest

Purpose:
This soup uses Ayurvedic principles to kindle agni (digestive fire), balance vata and kapha (both aggravated by cold/damp weather), and help the body recover from or prevent seasonal flu.

Ingredients (Serves 2–3)

1/2 cup red lentils (masoor dal) – rich in iron and easy to digest

1 tsp grated fresh ginger – boosts agni, clears congestion

2 cloves garlic – natural antimicrobial

1/2 tsp turmeric – anti-inflammatory and immune-supportive

1/2 tsp cumin seeds – aids digestion

1/2 tsp coriander seeds – balances heat and detoxifies

1/4 tsp ground black pepper – enhances absorption of turmeric

1 small carrot, chopped – adds sweetness and grounding

1/2 zucchini or seasonal root vegetable, chopped

1 tbsp ghee or olive oil – nourishes and grounds vata

4 cups water or vegetable broth

Himalayan salt to taste

Optional: a pinch of asafoetida (hing) – reduces bloating and supports gut health

Fresh coriander leaves to garnish

Optional: squeeze of lemon (add just before serving)

Method

Rinse the red lentils thoroughly and soak for 15–30 minutes (optional but aids digestion).

In a pot, warm the ghee or olive oil. Add cumin seeds, coriander seeds, and asafoetida (if using). Sauté until aromatic.

Add ginger, garlic, turmeric, and black pepper. Stir for a minute.

Add chopped carrots, zucchini (or your chosen veg), and soaked lentils. Stir briefly to coat with spices.

Pour in the water or broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 25–30 minutes, or until lentils and vegetables are soft.

Add salt to taste. Use a hand blender if you prefer a smooth texture, or leave chunky for more grounding.

Garnish with fresh coriander and a dash of lemon juice just before serving.

Ayurvedic Tips:

Eat warm, cooked meals during winter to balance vata and kapha.

Avoid dairy, sugar, and raw foods when fighting a cold or flu.

Sip warm water or herbal teas (like tulsi, ginger, or licorice) throughout the day.
