Brain injury is no fun. With appropriate assessment, recommendations, treatment and support, however, we can achieve so much. We do at times see people who reflect on positive changes post brain injury including reflections like, “I like my self better now… I’m a good guy now… I am kinder now.” It’s amazing what brain recovery can do. There are times our thoughts feel heavy, and that can be normal. However, if they remain heavy for two or more weeks, it would be recommended to seek professional help. A visit to an informed GP could be the best first step. The GP might offer medication, make referral to a psychiatrist and/or a referral to a psychologist using a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). A psychologist will likely make a formulation and provide you with an evidence based treatment such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT). CBT and ACT can do some heavy “lifting”. It’s okay to seek professional help.

Whilst the damaged brain areas remain damaged, the adjacent areas can take over their typical function and find “sunlight” just like this fig tree from Italy. Sometimes this happens naturally like with this tree, yet other times we might require a Neuropsychology Assessment to figure out how the brain is working and what functions need more stimulation.

Dyslexia is a reading disorder, currently know as a Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) in reading.

Two main myths suggest that people with dyslexia have impaired intelligence (not true) and have poor chance for a successful and fulfilling career (not true either).

Early diagnosis is crucial for a child to receive a timely treatment and as a consequence prevent development of secondary symptoms noted in the diagram below.

Brain Matters psychology provides assessments of dyslexia and other SLDs.
