E-Vam Institute is proud to present Sam Bercholz teaching for the Buddhist Summer School 2026 (Streaming Live into Maitripa Centre)!

Sam Bercholz will be teaching on "CONQUERING THE FOUR MARAS".

When Shakyamuni Buddha sat beneath the Bodhi Tree, poised on the edge of enlightenment, he was confronted by the demon Mara - embodiment of temptation, fear, desire, and doubt. Mara unleashed every form of seduction, provocation, and confusion imaginable to divert the Buddha from awakening. However, the Buddha saw through these illusions, conquered Mara, and attained complete realization - opening the path of liberation that has inspired beings for over 2,600 years.

As modern-day dharma practitioners, we too face our own Maras: the subtle and not-so-subtle forces of distraction, emotional turmoil, death, and delusion that pull us from the path.

We will explore the nature of the Four Maras in the context of our lives, how to recognize their patterns as they arise, methods for transforming them into insight, and how to meet each challenge with courage and clarity.

❓What defines a good society from a Buddhist View

This opening forum question will be presented by the following teachers at the Buddhist Summer School 2026:

Dungse Jampal Norbu
Venerable Thich Linh Tan
Ekai Korematsu Roshi
Sam Bercholz
Traleg Khandro

The Opening Forum provides an opportunity for rich discussion as our esteemed BSS presenters representing the diverse Buddhist traditions, address this important question.

Throughout history, the concept of a ‘good society’ has been a subject of ongoing debate. This profound question delves into the very essence of human existence, regardless of whether it is examined from a political, philosophical, or religious perspective. How does Buddhism contribute to this debate? How can we through our own lives contribute to a ‘good society’? How, indeed, can the wisdom of Buddhism assist us in contributing to a world that increasingly feels fractured and uncertain?
The opening forum is FREE to attend. Go to www.buddhistsummerschool.org to reserve a ticket!

Teacher Spotlight for the Buddhist Summer School: Ekai Korematsu Roshi!

Ekai Roshi will be teaching on Zen Master Dōgen’s Shōbōgenzō chapter Shin Fukatoku - "THE MIND CANNOT BE HELD ONTO".

In this four-part series, Ekai Roshi explores Zen Master Dōgen’s Shōbōgenzō chapter Shin Fukatoku (The Mind Cannot Be Held Onto). Drawing from the Diamond Sutra and Dōgen’s oral presentation, these talks examine how “mind” cannot be grasped - past, present, or future - and how awakening arises through this very ungraspable reality.

Through Tokusan’s encounter with the old woman selling rice cakes, Dōgen illuminates the difference between intellectual understanding and direct realization. Each session unfolds a facet of practice: the fleeting nature of thought, the folly of attachment to knowing, the humility of meeting a true teacher, and the transformative power of awakening.

Participants are invited to inquire deeply—through meditation and reflection—into how the ungraspable mind manifests in everyday life, moment by moment, breath by breath.

On "The Effectiveness of Spiritual Practice".

No matter where we are on a path, it is always beneficial to pause and seek orientation. Words like practice, path, and goal are often used as if their meaning were self-evident, yet without reflection they can remain vague. What kind of effect is my practice having? What am I actually moving toward?

This course will explore some of these important questions from multiple angles, drawing on different Buddhist approaches. Our aim is to clarify not only how practice is described, but how it can be evaluated and embodied—so that its fruits are evident both in ordinary living and in the unfolding of the spiritual path.

When it comes to understanding the Buddhist path, Enlightenment can often seem a vague idea or a far-away state of being. However, in this series of talks, Rinpoche shows us how understanding enlightenment is integral to understanding practice…

The Seven Factors of Enlightenment are indispensable on the path.

They provide both the means and the inspiration to develop deep appreciation for practice and confidence in the efficacy of the Buddhist path in terms of spiritual transformation.

In this audio series, Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche IX starts with the Seven Factors of Enlightenment; explores emotional and conceptual obstacles; and emphasizes cultivating embodied compassion and wisdom for our benefit and that of others.

Part 1 (26 Oct): The Seven Factors of Enlightenment

Part 2 (23 Nov): The Psychology of Compassion, Buddha-Nature and the Destructive Factors of Mind

Part 3 (14 Dec): The Bodhisattva Path: Compassion in Action, Wisdom, and the Six Pāramitās
