No ultrasound service will be available at our practice Friday 1 November & Monday 4 November, whilst Dr Vlasic attends the ASUM 2024 conference. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Staff will still be available for any queries or appointment bookings on 07 4945 5000.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we want to remind everyone to be

• 1 in 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime
• Around 1 in 700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime

Here are a few facts about breast cancer:
1. It’s the most common cancer diagnosis for women worldwide
2. The majority of breast cancers (80%) occur in women over 50
3. In the last 10 years, breast cancer diagnosis has increased by 36%
4. Thanks to research, improvements in treatment, earlier detection, and breast awareness, survival rates have increased
5. Symptoms of breast cancer will depend on where the tumour is, the size of the tumour and how quickly it is growing in the breast. Some people may not have any symptoms and the breast cancer is found during a screening mammogram.

Symptoms of breast cancer may include:
• A lump or thickening in the breast, especially if it is only in one breast
• Changes to the shape or size of the breast
• Changes to the shape of the ni**le, such as crusting, sores or ulcers, redness or inversion (a ni**le that turns in when it used to point out)
• Changes to the skin of the breast, such as dimpling (sometimes looking like an orange peel), a rash, scaly appearance, unusual redness or other colour changes
• Fluid leaking or discharge from the ni**le that occurs without squeezing
• Persistent, unusual pain that doesn’t go away
• Swelling or discomfort in the armpit

During your pregnancy obstetric ultrasound plays a significant role in your care. The timing of the examination and the number of scans performed may vary between patients, but most expectant parents will experience seeing their baby for the first time during a first trimester ultrasound examination.

Ultrasound has seen many technological advances since its inception three decades ago with ever expanding applications. Here are some 3/4D images obtained during a recent Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan performed at 12 weeks.

Our practice has been performing the Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan for the last 15 years with over three thousand of these studies completed during this time. At our practice, the NT scan is performed between 11 weeks 2 days and 13 weeks 4 days gestation.
