16 Days of Activism, Day 7:

Housing insecurity and homelessness play a critical role in enabling or preventing women achieving safety. Lack of access to safe housing creates an enormous hurdle that prevents many women from escaping violence, or returning to a violent relationship.

16 Days of Activism, Day 6:

Children may be used by perpetrators in tactics of control directed at their other parent, carer or family member. This may look like asking children to report back on the parent or care giver, using behaviour that indicates non return of a child/ren, undermining the relationship between the parent/caregiver and child or threatening to harm child/ren.

16 Days of Activism, Day 5:

Sexual violence includes anything sexual that makes you feel scared or uncomfortable. Children are at greater risk of harm from sexual violence. Indigenous children face additional barriers for disclosing violence which are related to fears of authorities, potential removal, experiences with justice system and service providers.

In our community, the term 'family violence' is more broad, than in non-Indigenous communities. 'Family violence' includes family and intimate relationships, kinships and community connections and includes lateral violence. Hospitalisation statistics only reflect the more severe or repeated cases of family violence that result in medical assistance.

For more information on what family violence can look like, check out this fact sheet created by Djirrahttps://djirra.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Family-Violence-Factsheet-October-2021.pdf

16 Days of Activism, Day 2:

Indigenous people face unique risk factors that contribute to family violence, that must be recognised as both a cause and effect of social disadvantage and intergenerational trauma. The drivers behind violence against Indigenous women and children are intersecting and accumulative, being closely linked to colonisation, systematic racism, intergenerational trauma and social inequity.

To find out more about the drivers of violence visit RESPECT Victoria https://www.respectvictoria.vic.gov.au/prevention/drivers
