A few weeks ago I celebrated the opening of Intersection: the artist and art therapist. I was one of 10 arts therapists displaying their art work. It was the first time in over twenty years that I’ve been in an exhibition.

It was so great to be in community with other arts therapists. It helped me to feel connected and gave me something to work towards.

It was also beautiful to talk about and be witnessed in my grief process, and to de-stigmatise grief processes and bring mine into the light.

Thanks to my beautiful arts therapy peers who made this exhibition happen and friends and family who came to celebrate me and my work 💫🙏💖

I’ll leave you with my artist statement:

‘My process involved using music and dance to be with my grief in a loving and present way, capturing this expression through self-portraits. Loving presence is essential to healing, for me personally, but also in my work as an arts therapist.

Ps. The exhibition is on until 21/6. So there’s still time to check it out if you want to. Details in bio

It’s been a while since I’ve shared anything on my business socials. I’ve been taking a big step back to care for myself and my little family after the heartbreaking loss of a beloved family member. If I’ve seemed quiet here, that’s why.

As a therapist, I’ve had to truly practice what I preach—engaging in radical self-care during this time.

Creative projects have become an important part of my grief journey and a way to care for myself. Dance, in particular, has been an anchor—helping me be with my grief, feel held, and hold myself through it.

One of the creative pieces to emerge from this process is a series of self-portraits overlaid with collage. This work is part of a group exhibition called Intersection: The Artist and Art Therapist.

The exhibition is a collaboration of members of the Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association (ANZACATA) Local Regional Group (LRG) and was generously funded by

You’re warmly invited to the opening, or to visit the exhibition another time.

Opening details:

Saturday 31st May 2-4pm
Rusten House Art Centre
87 Collett street, Queanbeyan (see link in comments, for more detail)

With love,
Jemima 💛💚

Hi everyone,

You may have heard the shocking news that the NDIS plan to preclude arts therapy from the NDIS as of 1/2/25. After this date it will need to be funded out of the community participation budget. Which is massively unsustainable for any arts therapists to maintain a private practice. Also absolutely insulting to the work we do as therapists.

We don’t want to lose it. We are fighting.

Please help us by signing and sharing this petition 🙏

My client used air dry clay as an act of self-care. We noted how soothing it was to be with the clay and how it brought a sense calm and equilibrium.

A knowing came from this process. One of contact with the things that take her out of mental ruminations, and back into her body - into calm.

Arts therapy is such a beautiful medium for providing space to rest, calm the nervous system and to explore through play and novelty. In a fast paced world, and one where trauma sets us on doing and going, space to slow and find peace is hugely therapeutic.

Take time to find little moments to go slow today.
