"Seize the Day"
"Carpe Diem"

No matter what language you speak, humans across the world have the same sentiments.

Stoicism emphasizes focusing and immersing yourself in the present moment, what's before us and on what is within our control.

It encourages attention, action and effort in the present moment, on today, rather than worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. Two eternities we have no control over but the NOW.

Seize your now moments today!

Happy Friday๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ’ช๐ŸŒž

๐Ÿ‘ฅ๏ธ For many of us, it seems as though our lives are lived and experienced from two perspectives:
the past, either in negative recollection or idealised nostalgic reflection, the other,
theย unborn future, burdened with uncertainty, false fears, or high hopes,
both having the potential of robbing us of one thing in our current control, the fleeting present NOW.

Furthermore, most of the things we really "need" are right under our noses but do we see them while we have them?ย

ย ๐Ÿ”น๏ธOur wants? Desires? Endless!
ย ๐Ÿ”น๏ธOur needs? Essentials? Perhaps already in your current experience but the power of your insatiable desires may overshadow your ability to clearly see the difference.

๐Ÿ’ช There is nothing wrong with wanting to level up in life and look forward. Growth and expansion is a natural part of the human experience and also, it's perfectly natural, to fondly recall and reminisce the past.

The key questions are you mostly here or over there? Are you content where you are while eager for more?

For eg, when on holidays are you really there?
Or too busy snapping selfies and not immersed in the fleeting moments? Or is your mind on bills?
Or when you're playing with your kids are you thinking of work? Or when in traffic are you dreaming of getting away?ย

So when are you ever really content and thankful for what you have or where you are?

๐Ÿ› The Stoics, emphasised the most precious time of all, the holy NOW which is in our control and made a thankful heart a daily habit, regardless of circumstance. Our Stoic guide Marcus Aurelius reminds us:

โœจ๏ธ"Do not indulge in dreams of having
what you have not,ย
but reflect upon the blessingsย
you do possess,
and then thankfully rememberย
how you would long for them
if they were not yours."โœจ๏ธ

๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ In our Stoic Yoga classes we try and practice presence, create contentment and move mindfully by focusing on the task at hand, just as we are. Immersed in the breath that we are currently breathing, inhabiting the pose, appreciating what's infront of our nose, the moment before us.

๐Ÿ’ซ One of my favourite movies of all time, and literally ahead of its time, is ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ starring Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey. The film was based on ๐˜พ๐™–๐™ง๐™ก ๐™Ž๐™–๐™œ๐™–๐™ฃ'๐™จ novel of the same name.

๐Ÿ’ซ I can honestly say, I've watched it so many times, I've lost count. ๐Ÿ˜œ Specifically, the opening scene which takes us on a breathtaking, epic, mind-blowing journey from our home planet, through the universe, and back to the eye of the protagonist of this magical story.

๐Ÿ’ซ Why do I love it so? Because it covers all of my favourite subjects, like space, stars, galaxies, stargazing, astronomy, the unknown, the universe, God, faith, humanity, consciousness, eternity, infinity, existence, possibilities, adventure, exploration, life, love, fear, relationships, connection, meaning, purpose, the mind, heart, soul, psychology, philosophy, science and our insatiable and eternal quest for truth and understanding this mysterious experience of Life and our place in it.

The universe is a pretty big place. If it's just us, it seems like an awful waste of space.

๐Ÿ’ซ You're an interesting species. An interesting mix. You're capable of such beautiful dreams, and such horrible nightmares. You feel so lost, so cut off, so alone, only you're not. See, in all our searching, the only thing we've found that makes the emptiness bearable, is each other.

๐Ÿ’ซ Any faith that admires truth, that strives to know God, must be brave enough to accommodate the universe.

๐Ÿ’ซ She had studied the universe all her life, but had overlooked its clearest message: For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love.

๐Ÿ’ซ Small moves, Ellie. Small moves.

โœจ
๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€ In our Stoic Yoga classes, we explore, challenge, and align the body, breath, heart, and mind, acknowledging that we are all uniquely one of a kind, each with purpose and value, we strive to make that Contact and connection to the highest and deepest parts of ourselves, one small move and breath at a time.

โœจ๏ธ The ancient Stoics believed that true peace and tranquillity came from ๐™ฌ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ, not from the external environment with all its triggers, conditions, attachments, delusions, and distractions.

๐Ÿ› A fundamental principle of ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ž๐™˜ ๐™ฅ๐™๐™ž๐™ก๐™ค๐™จ๐™ค๐™ฅ๐™๐™ฎ is understanding the difference between what you can and can't ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ก in life. While easier said than done, key concepts include surrender, letting go, and acceptance.

So, HOW do we accept and surrender during times when we feel wronged, trapped in bad habits, procrastinate, resist, blame others or external circumstances for our thoughts, feelings, and actions?

๐Ÿ’ช One way Stoicism can guide us is by encouraging us to observe ๐™‰๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ง๐™š. Whether we like it or not, the universe and life are constantly changing, in flux, with ๐™จ๐™š๐™–๐™จ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ and cycles.

๐Ÿ› Stoicism puts us in the driver's seat by applying Stoic wisdom daily, we can recognise that we too are part of Nature and we can learn to ๐™›๐™ก๐™ค๐™ฌ with the ever-changing, cyclical nature of life.

๐Ÿ› Stoic Philosopher Seneca reminds us: "๐™‡๐™ค๐™จ๐™จ ๐™ž๐™จ ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™š๐™ก๐™จ๐™š ๐™—๐™ช๐™ฉ ๐™˜๐™๐™–๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™š, ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™˜๐™๐™–๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™š ๐™ž๐™จ ๐™‰๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ง๐™š'๐™จ ๐™™๐™š๐™ก๐™ž๐™œ๐™๐™ฉ."

๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ In our Stoic Yoga classes this September, coinciding with the new season ๐™Ž๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ in the Southern Hemisphere, we are invited to examine the areas of our lives, minds, bodies, and habits that need "๐™จ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™˜๐™ก๐™š๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ" with focus on cultivating deeper and longer ๐™š๐™ญ๐™๐™–๐™ก๐™š๐™จ, allowing ourselves to ๐™š๐™ญ๐™˜๐™๐™–๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™š the old for the new.

There is nothing to fear in releasing what no longer serves our well-being. Something new awaits to be received and experienced, but we must make room for it.

Try this little exercise regularly whenever you need to get back into the driver's seat, to reset or release: Take a deep breath in 1, 2, 3, 4, hold, now exhale longer, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, hold and repeat.

๐ŸŒฌ Out with the ๐™ค๐™ก๐™™, in with the ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ฌ!
๐ŸŒฌ Only you can breathe for you!

๐Ÿฆ‹ Hello SPRING!! ๐ŸŒผ

๐Ÿฆ‹ To those inhabitants of the Southern Hemisphere of our planet, September marks the beginning of Spring. The butterfly and its ๐™ข๐™š๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ข๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฅ๐™๐™ค๐™จ๐™ž๐™จ are a perfect symbol for ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ฌ ๐™—๐™š๐™œ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™จ and fresh starts as it emerges from its chrysalis, melting the winter cold of stagnation, darkness, and hibernation with warm hopes for change, growth, and regeneration.

๐Ÿ› Living in accordance with nature is a fundamental pillar of Stoic Philosophy. The ancient Stoics taught that the ๐™˜๐™ฎ๐™˜๐™ก๐™ž๐™˜๐™–๐™ก ๐™ฃ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ง๐™š ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™จ๐™š๐™–๐™จ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ was a metaphor for life's constant changes.

๐Ÿ› Most importantly, they advocated that the point of power was always in the present moment, and all experiences were opportunities to act virtuously regardless of the seasons, phases and changes that unfolded in life.

Marcus Aurelius, a Stoic Philosopher, reminds us of the perfection of Nature and that Life itself is change, with his quote:

In Stoic Yoga, every lesson is a new beginning, a reset, a renewal and an opportunity for growth, metamorphosis, and

I think this quote speaks for itself?

๐Ÿ’ซ How many of us hold grudges, grievances, unforgiveness, judgments, and criticisms of others? Their actions and reactions? And worst still, of ourselves?

๐Ÿ’ซ How many of us want others to change? Want the world to change? Want the external reality and circumstances to change so we can then change?

๐Ÿ’ซ What if that apology never comes? The explanation, reason, or excuse is not good enough, or never comes?

๐Ÿ’ซ What if you keep getting triggered and keep reacting because of others? Out there? Outside of you? Until they all change?

๐Ÿ’ซ What if that time never comes?

๐Ÿ’ซ The Stoics believed in focusing and controlling your own thoughts, words, actions, and reactions.

๐Ÿ’ซ What if you stopped looking outside and looked within and perhaps let your stillness, your humility, your courage to forgive or perhaps surrender, become the mirror for others to see their own reflection. Whether they can truly see or not? Does it matter anyway?

๐Ÿ’ซ In our Stoic Yoga classes, we are reminded to breathe, go within, focus on the task at hand, practice presence in easy and challenging postures, with attention on yourself and not comparing to others or what's out there but it is within, where the greatest power and peace lies.

Let the rest be. They have their own conscience to deal with. You have yours. Focus on the one thing you can change, i.e, yourself. It is not easy, but try.

๐ŸŒŠ Like waves and the sun, that come and go, ebb and flow, rise and set, we are invited to remember the ๐™ž๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ง๐™ข๐™–๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š of life and our human experience.

๐Ÿ™ The uncomfortable truth we all know but instead see as some inconvenient future event is that we too will eventually pass away.

๐Ÿ› The Stoics would use death and thoughts about our mortality as reminders to live with a sense of urgency and purpose by learning to prioritise the essential from the trivial and to focus on things of lasting value such as virtue, truth, and good character in all circumstances.

โœจ๏ธ Marcus Aurelius, our favourite Stoic Philosopher, invites us to reflect on this impermanence and calls us to action to live with intention moment to moment. He does not say live perfectly, but rather with more purpose and bold resolve to seize the present in one of his quotes:

In our Stoic Yoga lessons, we are invited to ask these deeper questions throughout our practice by giving ourselves permission to reflect and let go of the things we may potentially be holding onto that no longer serve a purpose, hold us back or bring us joy in our minds, bodies and hearts.

๐Ÿค” How often do you find yourself in a rush on most of your days? Heading in some direction to some place, some goal, some thing that needs to be done? Or someone you need to meet and talk to? Or some outstanding issue you need to resolve? Or a problem you have to solve?ย

๐Ÿ˜– The things we need to ๐™™๐™ค, ๐™—๐™š ๐™ค๐™ง ๐™๐™–๐™ซ๐™š in life are forever never-ending, leaving us in a state of perpetual unfinished business or with the ingrained need for constant external stimulation, distraction or validation.

๐Ÿ› Seneca, a Stoic philosopher, often wrote about the importance of virtue, presence, self-control, time-management and living in accordance with nature among other Stoic principles he covered in his writings.

His quote "๐™‰๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™ข๐™ฎ ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™ฎ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™ ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ, ๐™ž๐™จ ๐™– ๐™—๐™š๐™ฉ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง ๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™ค๐™ค๐™› ๐™ค๐™› ๐™– ๐™ฌ๐™š๐™ก๐™ก-๐™ค๐™ง๐™™๐™š๐™ง๐™š๐™™ ๐™ข๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™–๐™ฃ ๐™– ๐™ข๐™–๐™ฃ'๐™จ ๐™–๐™—๐™ž๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ฎ ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ฅ ๐™Ÿ๐™ช๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™ฌ๐™๐™š๐™ง๐™š ๐™๐™š ๐™ž๐™จ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ฅ๐™–๐™จ๐™จ ๐™จ๐™ค๐™ข๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ข๐™š ๐™ž๐™ฃ ๐™๐™ž๐™จ ๐™ค๐™ฌ๐™ฃ ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™ฎ" aligns with these themes, suggesting that true wellbeing, mental/emotional strength and feeling contentment or that inner peace comes from within and not from external sources.ย

๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ In our ๐™Ž๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ž๐™˜ ๐™”๐™ค๐™œ๐™– classes, students are invited to pause and inhabit the moment, their thoughts, their bodies and feelings, just where they are no matter how easy or difficult the practice. So whether it's in class or life, learning to give yourself ๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ง๐™ข๐™ž๐™จ๐™จ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ to pause, slow down, be alone, surrender, or take the time to catch the beauty of the fleeting moments of life, are good signs of a well-๐˜ฝ๐™š๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ indeed.
