You’re not inconsistent.
Different parts of you are taking turns.

You can be thoughtful, insightful, even highly self-aware…
and still find yourself doing the opposite of what you know would help.

Not because you’re failing.
Not because you lack insight.

But because a different part of you has taken the helm in that moment.

One part wants connection.
Another part shuts it down fast.

One part knows better.
Another part steps in to protect, avoid, or brace for rejection, fear, or confusion.

From the outside, it can look confusing.
From the inside, it can feel exhausting.

In Resource Therapy, we don’t ask:
“What’s wrong with this person?”

We ask:
“Which part is running this moment?”

And that shift changes everything.

Because when the right part is supported,
change often happens much faster than expected.
Curious 🤨 Have you ever noticed a moment where one part of you knows exactly what to do…
and another part takes over anyway?

What if - You’re not inconsistent.

You’re not “self-sabotaging.”

And you’re definitely not broken.

What most people experience is this:
👉 different parts of the self stepping forward at different times

One part wants closeness
Another protects by pulling away

One part knows exactly what to do
Another part takes over in the moment

This is where Resource Therapy changes everything.

Instead of asking:
“What’s wrong with me?”

We ask:
“Which Resource State is at the helm right now?”

That single shift reduces shame
and gives you something far more useful…

I’m curious 🤨

Most therapy doesn’t fail because of lack of care.
It fails because we’re not working with the right part.
You can have insight.
You can have empathy.
You can have years of experience.

But if the wrong part is at the helm…
it won’t land.

The anxious part won’t settle with reassurance.
The shutdown part won’t respond to logic.
The avoidant part will agree… and then disappear.

This is where therapy starts to feel frustrating.
For you… and for your client.

In Resource Therapy, we shift the focus.

👉 What part is here right now?
👉 What does it need?
👉 What do I do next?

And suddenly…
therapy becomes more precise.
More effective.
And often — much faster.

If you’ve ever walked out of a session thinking
“that didn’t quite land”…

This is the skill that changes that -parts therapy. cpdtraining

What does The Magic Faraway Tree represent in psychology?
The story can be understood as a metaphor for the inner world. In Resource Therapy, different “parts” or Resource States shape how we feel and respond. Behaviour begins to make sense when we understand which part is active and what it needs.

A psychologist reflects on The Magic Faraway Tree and how childhood stories reveal the inner world through a Resource Therapy parts lens.

OPI in Resource Therapy – Other Personalised Introject

OPI = Other Personalised Introject

In Resource Therapy, an OPI is an internalised “other” that is experienced as separate from the personality.

👉 It is not a Resource State
👉 It is not a part of the self

What makes an OPI different

Most introjects are:
• internalised voices
• held within a Resource State
• recognised as “mine”

But an OPI is different.

👉 It feels like it does not belong

You may notice:
• it speaks in the third person
• it denies being part of the client
• it feels like an external presence

How you recognise it in session

Something feels… off.

• It’s like you’re speaking to someone else
• The voice is fixed, rigid, often critical
• There is no shared sense of identity
• The client may say, “that’s not me”

👉 This is not a Vaded State
👉 This is not a Retro State

This is something sitting alongside the system

Why this matters

If you misidentify an OPI as a part:
• you may try to heal it
• you may try to integrate it
• you lose precision

In Resource Therapy:

👉 We do not treat OPIs as Resource States

How we work with it

• Engage it directly
• Clarify its status
• Support it to leave

👉 When resolved, it can leave completely

Clients often report feeling lighter, clearer, and quieter

The clinical clarity

Resource States = parts of the personality
Introjects = internalised relational imprints
OPIs = not part of the personality system

👉 Clean work
👉 Efficient work
👉 Accurate work
In one line

OPI = an “other” inside the system that is not part of the self

If you’ve ever felt something in session that didn’t quite fit…
this may be what you were noticing.

Not everything on the ship… is part of the crew ⚓️

In Resource Therapy, we often talk about parts — or Resource States — as the crew helping to run the ship.

But sometimes in session… something shows up that feels different.

👉 Not quite a part
👉 Not quite “me”
👉 Not quite belonging

Let’s make it simple:

🛟 Resource States (Parts)
These are your crew
They belong to you
They can feel, shift, and be healed

🧭 Introjects
These are voices or messages from others
Held within a part
We work through the part that carries them

👻 OPI (Other Personalised Introject)
This is something else entirely

• Feels separate
• May speak in the third person
• Often rigid, critical, or fixed
• Experienced as “not me”

👉 Not part of the crew

And this is where therapists can get stuck.

If we treat everything like a part…
we start working in the wrong place.

In Resource Therapy, we stay precise:

✨ Parts are worked with
✨ Introjects are worked through
✨ OPIs are identified… and can leave

When this distinction lands, the shift can be profound.

Clients often describe:
👉 more space
👉 more clarity
👉 less internal noise

In one line:

If it’s not part of the crew…
don’t treat it like one ⚓️

If you’re a therapist and this resonates, you’re already seeing more clearly.
