How I Healed My Arthritis.

I was 10 years old. Growing up in Darwin. And I had arthritis in every joint in my body.

Not a metaphor. Not mild stiffness. Not "growing pains." Arthritis. Diagnosed. Medicated. In every joint of a 10-year-old kid's body.

Imagine being 10 and your body already hurts everywhere. While your mates are running around, climbing trees, playing footy, you're dealing with pain in places you shouldn't even know exist at that age.

Doctors gave me what they had. Medication. Management. The underlying message, spoken or not, was that this was something I'd be living with. That my body was fundamentally compromised.

Then a Tai Chi master from Singapore entered my life. And he saw something the doctors didn't.

He didn't see a broken body. He saw a body that had lost its conversation with itself. And he knew how to restart it.

Over 8 months of gentle, intelligent movement, my body restored itself. Not through force. Not through pushing through pain. Through the same principles I now teach to thousands of people around the world.

That was over 30 years ago. And that experience, that 10-year-old kid's body coming back to life through gentle movement, became the foundation for the Body Magic Method.

But today I don't want to talk about me. I want to talk about you. And the question I get asked more than any other.

How do I even begin?

Because hearing our bodies is possible. It is not always easy.

The human body and mind are the most complicated system in the known universe. 86 billion neurons. 100 trillion connections. More complexity in a single human being than in a galaxy.

And there is so much conflicting information out there. So many approaches to healing. So many experts saying completely opposite things with complete conviction. One says stretch. One says don't stretch. One says strengthen. One says rest. One says surgery. One says it's all in your head.

I'll tell you what I've learned. After 30 years. After working with thousands of bodies. After studying under masters and testing every approach I could find.

You start with simple. And pain free. And build from there.

That's it. That's the navigation system.

Not complicated protocols with 47 exercises and colour-coded spreadsheets. Not expensive equipment or monthly memberships. Not programmes that require a physiotherapy degree to understand.

Simple. What can your body do right now, today, without pain? Start there. Exactly there. Not where someone else says you should be. Not where you were 10 years ago. Where you are.

Stop Stretching.

It’s a waste of time.

Not because stretching is ā€œbadā€ā€¦

But because it’s solving the wrong problem.

Most people think tight muscles are the issue.

So they stretch.

And stretch.

And stretch some more.

Maybe it feels better for a few minutes…

But then what happens?

You wake up the next day…

And it’s tight all over again.

Same spot.

Same restriction.

Same frustration.

That’s not because your body is broken.

It’s because your body didn’t learn anything.

Here’s what’s actually going on…

The limitation in your movement usually isn’t at the end range.

It shows up way earlier.

That ā€œtightā€ feeling?

That’s your nervous system saying:

ā€œI don’t feel safe going further.ā€

So you can force a stretch…

Pull more range…

Even become more flexible…

But if your nervous system doesn’t trust it?

It takes it straight back.

That’s why stretching doesn’t hold.

Now compare that to mobility.

When you move through a range…

Slowly.

With control.

With awareness.

These Four Movements Hold The Secret To Unlocking Your Body's Natural Genius.

Chi Machine. Brachiation. Chinese Drum. Misogi.

Not four random exercises. A sequence. Each practice building on the last. Each one speaking to a different layer of intelligence your body has been carrying since before you had language for it.

Let me walk you through what's actually happening.

Chi Machine.

You start here. Lying down. Passive oscillation moving through your entire body. Your elastic systems wake up. Fascia that's been stuck and dehydrated starts receiving movement it hasn't felt in years. Fluid moves through tissue. The gel softens. Layers begin to glide again.

Your nervous system gets its first signal of the sequence: you're safe. Movement is happening and nothing hurts. The bracing can ease.

Brachiation.

Now you're vertical. Hanging. Swinging. Your arms moving through overhead range that modern life almost never asks of you.

This isn't just a shoulder exercise. This is primal. Your ancestors swung from branches. That pattern is hardwired into your nervous system. When you reactivate it, something deeper than your shoulders opens. Your thoracic spine mobilises. Your ribcage expands. Your breathing changes without you directing it.

Patterns that were installed millions of years before desks existed start running again.

Chinese Drum.

This is where energy starts to build. Centrifugal force generated through rotation. Hips driving the movement. Arms like cold spaghetti, completely relaxed. The momentum carrying them, not your deltoids.

The body stops being a collection of separate parts and starts operating as one integrated energy system.

Misogi.

Purification. Grounding. The practice that takes everything the first three movements generated and allows your nervous system to integrate it.

Stillness after movement. The moment your body absorbs what just happened. Consolidates the neurological changes. Settles into its new range, its new openness, its new relationship with itself.

Without this step, the body activates but doesn't integrate. Misogi is the full stop at the end of the sentence that gives the whole thing meaning.

Awaken. Integrate. Generate. Ground.

Here's what most peak performance training misses. And it's the reason most high performers plateau despite training harder and harder.

You cannot think your way into flow state.

You cannot strategise your way there. Cannot optimise or hack or biohack or shortcut your way there. Cannot read about it, plan for it, or schedule it.

Peak performance isn't always about pushing harder. It isn't always about more discipline, more intensity, more suffering as evidence of commitment.

Sometimes it's about clearing the way. Removing the tension, the bracing, the disconnection, the accumulated noise between you and what's already there.

These ancient movement patterns don't create your potential. They don't add something you're missing. They clear the path for genius that's been waiting to express itself since the day you were born.

You Didn't Learn To Stand From Standing. You Learned From The Ground Up. Time To Remember.

When you first learned to squat and stand, you didn't start in a standing position and work your way down to the ground.

No baby does that. No human being in history has ever learned to stand that way.

You started on your back. Staring at the ceiling. Discovering your hands. Finding your feet. Rolling to your belly. Pushing up onto your arms. Rocking on hands and knees. Crawling. Sitting. Squatting. And finally, one day, standing.

From the ground up. Layer by layer. Each stage building on the one before it. Your nervous system running an evolutionary programme that's been perfected over millions of years.

So why is everyone trying to restore their squat from standing?

Every gym. Every physio. Every rehab programme. Stand here. Squat down. Can't go deep enough? Try harder. Still can't? Here's a modification that keeps you upright.

But you never learned to squat from up here. You learned from down there. And trying to restore it from the wrong direction is highly inefficient and often counterproductive.

It's like trying to remember the end of a story without reading the beginning. The body doesn't work that way. The sequence matters.

If you've lost the ability to squat with your feet flat on the floor, I want you to hear something. And I want you to hear it gently.

That is not a criticism. Please don't take it personally.

It's a sign. A sign that your body has been stressed or injured at some point and adapted to that stress or injury the best way it had available. Your nervous system found a workaround. It figured out how to keep you moving within the limitations it was dealing with.

That adaptation is intelligent. It deserves respect, not shame. Your body did something remarkable. It kept you going.

But it doesn't have to stay that way.

And restoring what was lost doesn't require the pain, the force, or the frustration you've been told it does.

By being gentle with ourselves and going through the same progressions our body used to learn to move and stand in the first place, we can clean up and restore function far faster, far more efficiently, and far more effectively than most people have any idea is possible.

Start on the ground. Not standing. The ground.

Lie on your back. Roll. Feel how your body wants to transition. Use your hands. That's not cheating. That's how you did it the first time. Your hands connect to a fascial chain that runs through your arms, across your shoulders, and through your entire trunk. When your hand touches the floor, it activates that entire chain. That's design, not weakness.

Let your body relearn the sequence it already knows. Rolling to sitting. Sitting to kneeling. Kneeling to squatting. Squatting to standing. Each stage rebuilding the communication between every joint in the chain.

Your nervous system still has this programme. It's been there since you were 6 months old. Hardwired. Waiting. It doesn't need updating or improving. It just needs dusting off.

And here's the part that surprises everyone.

It doesn't have to hurt.

Not a little bit. Not "good pain." Not "push through it." Actually pain-free. Because you're not forcing range your body isn't ready for. You're rebuilding from the foundation. The same foundation that worked perfectly the first time.

When you approach the floor this way, gently, progressively, through the original sequence, something beautiful happens.

The squat returns. Not because you forced it. Because your body remembered. The floor stops being something to fear. It becomes something to play on. Getting down and getting up becomes smooth, confident, natural.

Not a test you pass or fail. A skill your body already has, waiting to be uncovered.

This is the Body Magic Method. Going back to the beginning.

Not because you've failed. Because the beginning is where the intelligence lives. The developmental sequence your body used to build everything is the same sequence that restores everything.

If You Are Over 45 Do This Every Day For 3 Minutes.

I don't count reps. I don't count time. I don't follow a programme. I don't set a timer. I don't track anything.

I listen.

To what my body wants to do today. Not yesterday. Not what a programme says. What my body, right now, in this moment, wants to explore.

And I follow that instead of overriding it.

Everything you've been taught about exercise says the opposite. Count. Track. Measure. Time your sets. Hit your numbers. Progressive overload. Push to failure. Log it in an app. Compare it to last week.

Your entire relationship with movement has been outsourced to numbers.

But when did you last ask your body what it actually needs?

Not your brain. Not your fitness tracker. Not the programme on your phone. Your body.

Watch what happens when I drop all of that and just flow.

Every joint moving through its natural range. No force. No strain. Everything eased. Everything gentle. My body choosing the movement, not my brain dictating it.

Effortless means your nervous system isn't bracing against a programme it doesn't want to do. It means your fascia hydrates because the movement is gentle enough for the tissue to actually respond instead of tensing against force. It means your joints lubricate because circles and flow stimulate synovial fluid in ways that static holds and heavy loads never will.

And here's what surprises everyone.

Your body starts wanting to move. Not dreading it. Not psyching itself up. Not needing motivation or discipline or a pre-workout drink. Wanting it. Looking forward to it. Missing it when you skip a day.

That's the shift. That's the moment everything changes.

When movement stops being something your brain forces your body to endure and becomes something your body asks for. When the 3 minutes isn't discipline. It's desire.

That's flow. Not the Instagram version. The real version. Where your body and your mind stop fighting each other and start collaborating.

This is what I've learned over 30 years.

The body doesn't respond to being told. It responds to being listened to. It doesn't open under pressure. It opens under invitation. It doesn't heal through force. It heals through flow.

Every overcomplicated programme, every rep-counting, timer-watching, failure-chasing approach is your brain trying to control a system that is infinitely more intelligent than your brain's plan for it.

3 minutes. Every morning. Flow instead of force. Listening instead of counting. Invitation instead of instruction.

Sound too simple?

That's because we've been sold complexity for decades.

More exercises. More equipment. More apps. More wearables tracking metrics that don't matter. More programmes with more phases and more progressions and more confusion. More money spent on solutions that create new problems you need new solutions for.

Let The Energy Flow And Your Body Will Heal Itself.

None of this looks like exercise. None of it follows a set. There's no rep count. No timer. No muscle group being isolated. No programme being followed. No form being perfected.

It looks atypical. Random, even. Like someone just moving for the sake of moving.

And that's exactly what it is. And that's exactly why it works.

Your body is an energy system. Not a machine. Not a collection of separate parts to be trained independently. An energy system.

When energy flows freely through that system, everything optimises. Naturally. Without intervention. Blood circulates more efficiently. Inflammation reduces. Your nervous system comes out of protection mode. Fascia rehydrates. Joints lubricate. The immune system strengthens. Pain quiets. Sleep deepens. Clarity returns.

Your body doesn't need to be told how to heal. It needs the energy flow to be unblocked so it can do what it already knows how to do.

When energy gets stuck, when movement becomes rigid, repetitive, forced, or simply absent, everything downstream suffers.

Stiffness that won't stretch out. Fatigue that sleep doesn't fix. Pain that has no clear injury behind it. The vague but persistent feeling of being locked inside a body that won't cooperate with the life you're trying to live.

Most approaches try to fix the symptoms. Stretch the stiffness. Strengthen the weakness. Medicate the pain. Foam roll the tension. Target the area.

Nobody addresses the flow.

Nobody asks: what if the problem isn't in the tissue? What if it's in the movement of energy through the tissue?

Here's the invitation. And it's simpler than anything you've been told.

Take the intensity out. Add fluidity.

Let your body move without a destination. Without a goal. Without a rep count. Without trying to look like anything or achieve anything or get anywhere.

Just flow.

Let one movement become the next. Let your arms go where they want. Let your spine find its own rhythm. Let your hips explore range you didn't know was there. Follow your body's impulse instead of overriding it with your brain's agenda.

The moment you stop controlling movement and start allowing it, something remarkable happens.

Your breathing changes without you trying. Deepens. Slows. Your shoulders drop without you noticing. Tension you've been carrying for years dissolves without you addressing it directly. Your nervous system exhales for the first time all day. Maybe for the first time all week.

That's not just relaxation. That's your body's healing intelligence switching on.

Not something you added. Something you uncovered.

It was always there. Underneath the tension. Underneath the bracing. Underneath the years of trying too hard, pushing too much, forcing your body through programmes it didn't want to do.

Waiting for you to stop efforting and start flowing. Waiting for you to stop being the foreman and start being the collaborator.

This is what I've learned over 30 years of martial arts, bodywork, and movement practice. The body doesn't heal through force. It heals through flow. It doesn't restore through intensity. It restores through fluidity.
