What started as a simple flu nearly cost Chuck his life. Now, he wants other Queenslanders to know the warning signs. 😔
Fit and healthy Cairns resident Chuck woke up feeling like he had the flu. Fever, sweats and shivers made him think it would pass but three weeks later, things had gotten dramatically worse.
‘I just kept getting worse, so I went back in for another visit with my GP and more tests,’ he said.
‘Once my doctor received those results, he rang me up and told me to go straight to the Emergency Department.’
By the time a friend rushed him to hospital, Chuck’s temperature had spiked to nearly 41°C, and he was delirious and hallucinating.
Doctors discovered he was infected with melioidosis also known as 'melio' a dangerous soil-borne bacterium that had spread to his lungs, hip bone and an artery leading to his right leg.
Melio is most common during and after heavy rainfall, when the bacteria present in soil and water can enter the body through cuts, abrasions or contaminated water droplets in the air.
Emergency surgery followed, involving a large abdominal incision and an artificial artery graft rerouted from Chuck’s left side of his body.
Chuck spent 10 days in hospital, followed by months of recovery, weight loss, muscle wasting, and ongoing antibiotics. 🏥
‘It was terrifying, painful and very scary,’ he said.
When asked what message he wants others to hear, Chuck made it clear.
‘Don’t wait, if you are showing symptoms, get to your GP or hospital sooner than later,' he said.
‘I probably left it too long. I went from thinking I had a flu, that I would normally recover from in a week, to nearly dying.'
People with conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, lung disease or weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness from melioidosis.
To help protect yourself you can:
> cover cuts and wounds
> avoid muddy water where possible
> wearing protective footwear
> seek medical help early if you feel very unwell after heavy rain.
If you feel very unwell after rain, especially with fever, cough or difficulty breathing, seek medical help early, it could save your life.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Chuck, and reminding us all not to ignore the warning signs. ❤️
