Are You Dealing with a "Permanent" Slouch? 🧱
A rounded upper back that doesn’t straighten when you try to stand tall, notably in somebody under 35, might not just be "poor posture." It could be Scheuermann’s Disease.
Often appearing during the teenage growth spurt, this condition occurs when the vertebrae grow unevenly (wedging), leading to a structural curve (“hump”) in the spine known as kyphosis.
🔍 How is it Diagnosed?
Diagnosis isn’t just about looking at the curve; it’s about ruling out other causes of back pain and stiffness. At Destiny Health, we take a comprehensive approach:
Physical Assessment: Checking for the "Apex" of the curve and testing spinal flexibility.
Imaging: X-rays are the gold standard to measure the degree of vertebral wedging.
Ruling Out the "Mimics": We work with your GP to ensure it’s not just Postural Kyphosis (which is flexible) or more serious inflammatory conditions like Ankylosing Spondylitis.
🩸 Do You Need Blood Tests?
While Scheuermann’s itself is a structural bone issue and won’t show up in a vial, blood tests are vital for differential diagnosis. Your GP may look for:
CRP & ESR: To rule out systemic inflammation or infection.
HLA-B27 Marker: To check for underlying autoimmune spinal conditions.
Vitamin D & Calcium: To ensure your bone health is optimised for growth and repair.
🛠️ Management & Recovery
The goal isn't just "fixing" the curve, it’s about function and freedom from pain.
Targeted Physiotherapy: Strengthening the posterior chain and opening up the chest.
Bracing: In severe cases during active growth to prevent further wedging.
Lifestyle Modification: Managing load and improving ergonomic setups for school or work.
Stop guessing, start progressing. A structural issue requires a clinical strategy.
