Starting school is a big step in every little person’s life, but also for their mama and papa bears too! (Cue the “where did my baby go” tears) 🥲
We hear the term “school readiness” all the time, but it is about so much more than letters and numbers!
At BBTH we look at all the foundational skills that help children feel confident, regulated and ready to learn.
✨ OT skills that support a smooth start to school:
Independence — managing clothing, toileting, lunch boxes and belongings
Fine motor skills — pencil grip, cutting, drawing and opening containers
Core strength & posture — sitting upright on the mat or at a desk
Sensory regulation — coping with noise, busy classrooms and transitions
Social participation — turn-taking, following instructions and group routines
Supporting these skills in the lead up and beyond can make a huge difference to your child’s confidence and participation in the classroom 🌱
If you’re unsure whether your child is ready or would like support in building these skills, an OT (aka US) can help 💙
