A colleague quoted South Park to me today, and I couldn't have said it better. "Well yeah, and I'm sad, but at the same time I'm really happy that something could make me feel that sad. It's like, it makes me feel alive, you know? It makes me feel human. And the only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt somethin' really good before. So I have to take the bad with the good, so I guess what I'm feelin' is like a beautiful sadness."

Thank you so much to all the beautiful people at for the last 3 wonderful years. I didn't think I would ever find another work family as great as my last. Walking in to my last day today, I looked at the building and realized I found it. I have been so lucky to work with such a talented and diverse team.

Today, we take a moment to honour and bring awareness to the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit peoples. Please take a moment to learn and reflect. Remember this affects not just these people, but also tens of thousands of their family and friends.

What activities are you doing this week to ensure you get everything your body needs?

👊🏼 Our bodies need a variety of exercise in order to be our best. Let’s talk about the importance of each.

💪🏻Strength: As you age, you are at risk for osteoporosis. When you lift heaving things, your body will deposit more calcium where those muscles attach, making stronger and more dense bone. 🦴
Weight training 🏋️‍♀️ has been proven to be more effective at treating and preventing osteoporosis than calcium supplements! Muscle also burns more fat. So win/win!!

💃Cardio: We know that cardio burns calories and creates lean muscle, but we forget about the internal benefits of cardiovascular exercise!

Did you know that women have a lower survival rate after a heart attack than men? 🫀Cardiovascular exercise strengthens your heart 🫀, lungs 🫁 , and even your blood vessels🩸. It makes you less likely to suffer heart attacks, gives you more lung capacity, and helps with swelling and edema caused by vascular insufficiency.

🤸🏼Mobility: It includes both strength AND flexibility. When we sit all day in one position (thank you computer work! 💻) our bodies will lay down more connective tissue to sort of freeze 🥶 us in place. For a muscle to be healthy, we need both a contraction and relaxation. When we spend too long with muscles in a contracted state, it often leads to pain and discomfort.

Flexibility 🤸🏼 means you don’t have any muscles or joints limiting a certain movement. For example, if you want to touch the ground without bending your knees, your hamstrings and glutes need to relax to facilitate that motion. Stretching and exposure to that movement helps those muscles relax.

⚖️ Stability: when your body can maintain a steady position or return to that position when disturbed. When we don’t have stability, we are prone to injuries 🤕. To build stability, we start with isometric contractions - we contract a muscle 💪🏻without moving those joints, or moving them in small motions. Then, we add force, including balance balls, uneven surfaces 🏖, water moving around us 💦, even a different position using the same muscle.

Our goal is to offer you all these types of exercises to keep your body at its best. 👊🏼

Let’s talk exercise. 💪🏻 Did you know RMTs can prescribe therapeutic exercises? I am often asked what is the best kind of exercise, and my answer is almost always “it depends, what do you like?”
If I said swimming 🏊‍♀️ to the person that is afraid of the water, how is that going to be beneficial? If I recommend triathlons to someone who has been lounging on the couch the last 19 months (thanks COVID 😒), that person might try once and give up. I personally love swimming and dancing, but dislike running. What do you think I am most likely to do? What am I going to commit to doing regularly?
Our bodies are designed to move. Most of us work at desks now, and spend the majority of the days sitting. We need to move when we can to counteract that sedimentary lifestyle. Movement can be anything you like! The sky is the limits! Do you enjoy chair yoga, water walking, hiking, walking to the store, running, swimming, weight training, or parasailing? Whatever you love, do it!
Comment below with your favourite kind of exercise/movement! Tag your accountability partner, and get moving together!

Do you hate weight training? Think it’s just for muscles? Think again!
There is a law (Wolff’s Law) that states that where there is load, the body will lay down bone. Weight training not only places load on muscle, causing them to grow stronger, it does the same to bone! This has a direct impact on our risk for Osteoporosis and low bone density. Our bodies need the stress of lifting weights in order to signal where to place bone tissue! Calcium supplements can only provide our bodies with the nutrients to place bone, but we need the signal of load to tell it where to go!
Working with a medical professional, you can build a safe and effective weight training plan that will be right for you!
