Do not conflate a low calorie diet with a healthy diet. A healthy diet is not low in calories but high in nutrients, minerals and vitamins. The truth is that many low calorie diets are unhealthy, and those who follow them often end up gaining weight, becoming malnourished or developing a host of chronic health issues...

A healthy diet is not low in calories but high in nutrients, minerals and vitamins. The problem with low calorie diets is that they conflate a low calorie diet with a healthy diet.

Modern medicine has taught us to think about disease the wrong way. Modern medicine suggests that symptoms are the expressions of disease but fails to consider that disease is the expression of fundamental health defects.

The primary function of red blood cells is to transport oxygen from the lungs to tissues in the body. This oxygen is then transformed into energy at a cellular level. A low mean cell volume (where the red blood cells are smaller than average) inhibits this process - thus reducing the body’s capacity for energy production.

So, what is the cause of low mean cell volume? One common trait we have identified over our 38 years of body chemistry analysis is that those with low mean cell volumes (many of whom are suffering from chronic fatigue) are also low in iron.

Iron is critically important to the formation of haemoglobin - the part of the red blood cell that carries oxygen - and without sufficient iron, red blood cells tend to be smaller and deficient in haemoglobin. This ultimately limits the capacity of the red blood cells to carry oxygen and generate energy.

As for what drives iron deficiency - it is normally an improper diet. We often find those who aren’t eating sufficient protein (specifically that derived from red meat) in their diet, are low in iron.

Vitamin D is required for the absorption of calcium. So, in the instance of free calcium excess (high amounts of ionised calcium in the blood), the body deliberately lowers serum vitamin D to prevent calcium from being deposited into the arteries, joints and organs.

So, serum vitamin D will be low in those suffering from free calcium excess. The problem most people make here is that they assume this is because they are vitamin D deficient or a lack of sun exposure. Low vitamin D is not responsible for poor health in this instance. Low vitamin D is, in this instance, indicative of an underlying health issue (free calcium excess) or a poor protein status.

Attempting to raise serum vitamin D levels by supplementing will fail to address the underlying problem. Not only that, but providing the body with additional vitamin D will compound the problem. It will lead to more calcium being deposited into the arteries, joints and organs, ultimately leading to a decline in health.

Most people consider gum disease an oral health issue or even a cosmetic issue. They bring it down to bad oral hygiene habits and turn to their dentist to stop or slow it. The truth, however, is that gum disease poses significant systemic health risks and should be viewed as a disease.

While the visible signs of gum disease - bleeding gums, receding gums, loose teeth, tooth loss and bad breath - are severe in their own right, the most sinister symptoms occur elsewhere in the body.

For instance, a 2013 study on stroke and heart attack patients conducted PCR DNA testing on the bacteria that caused the clots resulting in stroke or heart attack. It was determined that the clot-causing bacteria were derived from oral sources in every case. Herein lies the true danger of gum disease.

There’s this idea that cholesterol is our enemy - that it is harmful to health and we must lower it at all costs. Thus, most people are unaware that cholesterol performs many vital roles in the body. One of them is protecting against chronic inflammation.

Vitamin D can be measured in the blood. The optimal serum range for vitamin D is 100 - 150 nmol per Litre. Blood test results that show vitamin D within these ranges generally indicate good health. When blood tests show lower levels of vitamin D, it is typically interpreted as a vitamin D deficiency. However, this is not necessarily true, and there can be dire consequences to supplementing with vitamin D to correct this apparent 'deficiency'.

The food industry is rife with corruption. The New York Times reported that in the 1960s, when scientists were looking into the correlations between sugar, fat and heart disease, the 'Sugar Research Foundation' (now known as the Sugar Association) paid three Harvard scientists about $50,000 each to downplay the link between sugar and heart health.

Instead, they cast aspersions on saturated fat. After this research was published, the debate between sugar and heart disease died down, and low-fat diets gained endorsement from health authorities.

The Science of Balancing Body Chemistry

Founded in 1995 by Dr Eric Davis (Dentist), Nutrition Diagnostics is forged on the knowledge that ‘balance’ is the key to health. Since inception, our singular mission has been to balance the body chemistry of our clients.

We don’t subscribe to trending diets or radical health regimes. We recognise there is no one-size-fits-all approach to health. Instead, we take a science-based approach to health that is underpinned by the analysis and balancing of body chemistry. Our health programmes are tailored to the individual, and our supplements are naturally formulated by experts to deliver clinically-proven and measurable results. By correcting imbalances in body chemistry - both through our tailored health programmes and our range of supplements - we have helped our clients around the world restore their health and wellbeing, and lead happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.
