Every week, the TerraCycle Foundation's river traps in Thailand prevent 7,700 kilograms of waste from polluting the ocean! This International Day of Actions for Rivers, join them in protecting our waterways. 🌊

80% of ocean pollution starts in our rivers and waterways. Their mission is to remove that waste before it can reach the ocean. By partnering with local communities to build, adapt, and maintain marine trash capture technology, they collect and recycle rubbish by the tonne!

From the before to the after – this is what upcycling at scale can look like.

Our in-house industrial design team partnered with DSM-Firmenich in the USA to create five custom sculptures for their quadrennial Sensorium exhibit, transforming recycled materials into immersive pieces designed to showcase new scents and flavours.

Each sculpture was co-created to encourage interaction, spark imagination, and help visitors experience the exhibit in a more sustainable way. It’s proof that discarded materials can become something entirely new when we work together.

This Clean Up Australia Day is a reminder of how much litter is still ending up in our environment. According to the latest Litter Report from Clean Up Australia:

🗑️ 80.8% of litter found in our streets and natural environment is plastic
🚭 Cigarette butts were the most collected item at Clean Up events, making up 23.6% of all counted litter
🗑️Soft plastics account for 30.5% of litter
🗑️ Packaging represents 59.5% of reported litter

And this isn’t just a local issue. Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world, with around 4.5 trillion ci******es discarded globally each year. Cigarette filters are made from plastic fibres that don’t naturally break down, meaning they can persist in the environment when littered.

At TerraCycle, we’re working to keep hard-to-recycle waste out of landfills and incineration, and we’ve even been able to implement cigarette recycling processes in other regions.

Cleanups play an important role, but long-term solutions are just as important. Together, we can reduce waste and keep valuable materials in circulation.

When playtime is over, and you’re ready to recycle well-loved toys, check out TerraCycle’s recycling solutions! 🧸 When a shipment of toys arrives at one of our MRFs, we scan it to record the shipment information, date, weight, and material it contains before sorting the toys based on their characteristics and composition.

Then, the materials are recycled into new products like outdoor furniture and decking, plastic shipping pallets, watering cans, and more!
