Not quite but salads can provide great health benefits.

The origin of the word salad comes from the latin word meaning salt. Salads are abundant sources of mineral salts in their most readily assimilated form. Green leaves are some of the richest sources of essential minerals (salts) and vitamins and are the best sources of chlorophyll.

ENSURING OPTIMOM DIGESTION

🌿 The best time to eat salads is at noon and during the warmer months of the year (Summer, late Spring, Early Autumn). These times are when the digestive fire is most active and better able to digest raw foods.

🌿 Setting aside time to chew your salads thoroughly releases the healing & building digestive enzymes into your body.

🌿 You will find a light carb based salad during lunch time with protein won’t bog you down & keeps your mind sharp and body strong for your daily tasks.

GROW YOUR SALAD

🌿 Greens are the easiest thing to grow in the garden and fresh is always best.

SALAD IDEAS

🌿 There are a number of greens that can be added to a salad such as spinach, kale, chard, turnip greens, beet greens, cabbage, broccoli, okra, green beans, fresh peas, asparagus, collards, lettuce, celery, Chinese cabbage, bok choy, mustard greens, etc

Echinacea for acne.

Echinacea is another great herb for acne as it contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. When sebum and cellular debris build up inside the hair follicle, the hair follicle gets infected by a certain bacterium (P. acnes) which stimulates immune and inflammatory cells to accumulate in the follicle leading to the formation of pus. In vitro studies have demonstrated that Echinacea inhibits the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by P. acnes. Which means Echinacea has the potential to reduce the severity of cystic acne and acne flare-ups. Furthermore, Echinacea reduces lymph congestion which is incredibly important in acne sufferers. When the lymphatic system is congested with waste and debris, some of this waste may be processed though the skin (the skin is also known as the second liver) which can increase the likelihood of breakouts.

Alteratives or “blood purifying” herbs are used for specific types of dis-eases & from an energetic perspective are best used for damp-heat conditions like fluid congestion, joint & tissue stagnation. This leads to inflamed damp wet skin conditions like eczema & oily acne & conditions like joint pain with arthritis, headches, sluggish digestion & liver stagnation can be experienced.

All this highlights the person’ metabolism is not able to tolerate the metabolic waste products that are naturally produced with living. E.g. After eating food the body (cells & organs) isn’t able to efficiently eliminate the amount of waste products to keep homeostasis. This highlights the 5 channels of elimination (Skin , kidney, lungs, bowel, lymph) are not working efficiently.

In classic herbalism this is called “Bad blood” syndrome & alterative herbs are used to open these channels of elimination to enhance the body’s natural detoxification process. Burdock is an alterative herb which is commonly used alongside dandelion as they synergistically work well together enhancing each other’s effects.

It's important to select the right herb for the right constitution & eliminative channel. For example, if a person has more of a “Vata” constitutional type they tend to more be on the cold, dry, weak, emaciated, malnourished & weak digestive type. So taking alterative herbs which cool & drain fluids from the body will exacerbate a Vata type making the person more predisposed to dry skin, anxiety, nervous energy & tension.

Individuals with skin complaints need to be careful when taking herbs and need to take alterative herbs in the right quantity, for the right amount of time, with the right blend of herbs to balance the constitutional tendencies.

We utilise effective herbal formulas to optimise your skin health and keep your blood healthy.

Rosacea and eczema are conditions with similar symptoms.

Eczema often begins from an early age, whereas rosacea is more likely to start during middle-age and in females.

Rosacea is typical of a lot more flushing across the skin, usually occurring on cheeks and nose.
Papulopustular rosacea causes fluid filled bumps which can look like an acne breakout.

Eczema is more likely to affect the creases of the joints and when on the face most common on the eyelids and around the mouth.

Its vital you know what skin condition you have as treatments for eczema may exacerbate rosacea. Send us a DM for how we can help your skin condition.

Burdock root (also known by its botanical name (Articum lappa) is one of our favourite herbs here at NSC for treating acne and eczema.

Traditionally it has been used as a blood cleanser for many chronic skin conditions.

Burdock promotes detoxification of the blood and reduces lymphatic congestion. When someone has a high toxic load and lymphatic stagnation this can lead to acne breakouts or eczema flare-ups because the skin is an important eliminatory organ. For example, if metabolic waste can’t be effectively processed, broken down and cleared via the liver and kidneys, then some of our metabolic waste gets processed through the skin. This toxic waste can consequently flare-up acne and eczema.

At NSC, we often prescribe this herb to our clients in the form of tea or added to herbal tinctures.

We do not recommended self prescribing any herb without the guidance of a trained practitioner.

For most people with acne, the condition goes much deeper than just the skin. Acne can have a huge impact on self-esteem and mood. The condition can cause low self esteem, self-consciousness, embarrassment and frustration. More often than not, people with acne develop a negative view of their body.

Believe me I know from my own experience just how acne takes it toll on mental health. You are not alone. Before I studied natural health, I personally tried so many options to improve my skin from an array of different cleansers, to antibiotics, OCP, excluding foods and trying a variety of different supplements and despite all my attempts to clear my acne, it still came back with a vengeance. I was often left feeling broken, defeated, frustrated and angry.

Unfortunately, having a visible condition can lead to negative remarks from other people and it is hard to not let that affect your feelings of self worth. I often received unwanted advice on how to improve my skin. When you receive these comments over and over again you can start to resent your body even more.

I remember in my early 20’s I had cystic acne all over my back and I felt ashamed and embarrassed to wear singlet tops in summer because i was afraid of what others would think or say.

From my experience, acne is not simply a condition of the skin it goes much deeper than that. It can be a sign of hormonal imbalance, digestive dysfunction, stress, food sensitivities, blood sugar imbalances, lymphatic congestion and increased toxic burden on the liver. There may also be an undiagnosed condition such as PCOS contributing to breakouts. It is SO important to identify what the underlying cause of your acne is in order to start improving your skin. Personally, it wasn't until I started to work on improving my gut and hormones did my acne begin to clear up. But for everyone the cause may be different.

At NSC our passion is to help you identify the root cause of your acne and treat accordingly to get your skin back on track. When you are ready to start your journey to clear skin, please don’t hesitate to contact NSC for a free 15-minute discovery call. We would love to hear form you.

People with eczema tend to have an over-reactive immune system. Substances in our environment or inside the body causes the immune system to over respond, causing inflammation and itchy rash-like skin.

Eczema can be very similar to an autoimmune disease where the immune system perceives the bodies own tissues as a threat.

A study in 2021 suggests that Eczema can start as an allergic response and progress to an autoimmune response (1).

Eczema sufferers have a significant more likelihood of having one or more autoimmune diseases (2).
The strongest associations for autoimmune conditions involved the skin (dermatitis herpetiformis, alopecia areata and chronic urticaria.), gastrointestinal tract (Coeliac disease, Crohn disease, or connective tissues (Rheumatoid arthritis, SLE)

Typical medical treatment is to suppress the immune system with steroid creams, and oral immunosuppressant medication. These don’t usually fix the issue and leave the skin more prone to a break-out later on. These medications can have their place in the worst cases, but it is vital to address and treat the cause of eczema at the same time.

Vitamin D is so important for our health, including our skin, yet the problem is we’re not getting enough of it.

Vitamin D has many roles in the human body including enhancing the absorption of dietary calcium for bone and muscle health, as well as supporting the immune system .

Clinical and epidemiological studies have linked low levels of Vitamin D with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Low levels may also be associated with poor wound healing.

So how can we increase our Vitamin D levels naturally? The answer may lie with mushrooms.

Mushrooms of different varieties contain a wide array of nutrients and phytochemicals which have numerous health benefits including immune enhancement, wound healing, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cholesterol lowering, anti-tumor and various other properties . Farmed mushrooms do in fact contain some vitamin D however the levels are so minuscule they would be considered negligible for therapeutic benefit .

Interestingly, however, mushrooms contain a compound in their cell walls called ergosterol that allows sunlight to be converted into vitamin D2 . So, when mushrooms are exposed to sunlight, UVB radiation converts ergosterol to pro-vitamin D2, which is an inactive form of vitamin D. When consumed by humans D2, like D3, is metabolised in the liver and then in the kidneys into a highly active form of vitamin D which can bind to receptors in various tissues around the body for utilisation.

According to one study, when commercial button mushrooms were exposed to midday sunlight for 15-20 minutes, they generated around 704 IU of vitamin D2 per 100g of mushrooms . This amount was almost doubled after 60 minutes of sun exposure. Of course, the amount of vitamin D generated will be determined by the time of day and season. It is also important to note that sun exposed sliced mushrooms produce more vitamin D than whole mushrooms from the same amount of UV exposure.

So why not give it a go? Start sun-drying store-bought or homegrown mushrooms of any variety and increase your daily dose of vitamin D to improve your skin heath!
