Elimination Communication, often called EC, is an approach where parents learn to recognise when their baby needs to wee or poo and respond by offering a potty, toilet, or suitable place to go. Rather than relying solely on nappies, it focuses on communication, timing, and connection between parent and baby.
Babies naturally give signals before they eliminate. These can include wriggling, going still, facial expressions, or certain sounds. Over time, parents begin to recognise patterns and rhythms, such as after feeds, upon waking, or during specific times of the day ๐
A few key facts:
โขโ โ EC has been practised around the world for generations and is still common in many cultures
โขโ โ In Australia, families interested in reducing waste may explore EC as a way to use fewer disposable nappies
โขโ โ It does not require perfection, many families practise it part-time alongside nappies
EC is not about rushing development or expecting independence too early. It is about responding to your baby, building awareness, and creating a sense of trust โจ
Every family approaches it differently. Some start from birth, others begin later, and many simply incorporate it into their daily routine in a way that feels manageable.
At its heart, EC is about connection, observation, and working with your baby ๐
