Recently, at Mercy Hospital for Women, one of our long-term antenatal patients was going through a challenging time. Her pregnancy was high-risk, and she had just learned that her baby would need urgent care after birth. It was frightening, overwhelming, and full of uncertainty for her and her partner.

On the same day she was meant to celebrate her baby shower, one of our midwives found her in tears. Everything she had planned had suddenly changed.

Instead of letting the day pass quietly, our midwife and a few colleagues stepped in with kindness and care. They decorated a private space, organised baby shower games, and helped the couple invite friends and family to join them. What followed was a heartfelt celebration — a chance for this family to honour their pregnancy and baby, even though circumstances were far from what they had imagined.

The couple were incredibly grateful, and we couldn’t be prouder of our midwives for creating such a special memory. It’s stories like this that remind us what Mercy Health is all about — compassion, care, and treating every family as our own.

The festive spirit has been in full swing at Mercy Health, with colleagues from our Support Services office in Richmond visiting several of our residential aged care homes to help decorate for Christmas.

Alongside trimming trees and adding festive touches, some of our team also spent time with residents decorating and writing Christmas cards — a simple but meaningful way to share connection at this time of year.

Thank you to our staff who generously gave their time. At this time of year especially, these small acts of teamwork and kindness help create moments of joy and connection for the people in our care.

Our Werribee Mercy Health Paediatric team has been recognised with the Children’s Healthcare Australasia 2025 Local/Community Medal of Distinction for their incredible Working Together for Kids program.

By bringing paediatric care directly into three school Community Hubs across Wyndham, one of Melbourne’s fastest-growing and most culturally diverse regions, the team is breaking down barriers that often prevent vulnerable children from accessing care.

So far, the program has supported over 520 children and held over 1,700 appointments! “This is early intervention at its most effective,” says Dr Kathy McMahon. “Families trust their school, and that trust helps us build care that truly works.”

At Mercy Health, Christmas is about kindness — and a little sparkle too.
For the second year, our Christmas Giving Trees have been installed at Mercy Hospital for Women, Werribee Mercy Hospital and Support Services.

Each tree offers a simple way to give: choose a tag from the tree with gift suggestions, purchase the gift, and help bring a moment of joy to people in our care over the Christmas period. This year, donations extend to people of all ages across our services, with gifts distributed by our Pastoral Carers, Social Work teams and Aboriginal Programs Unit.

Alongside the gifts, we’ve also seen kindness expressed in quieter ways. The children of one of our Mercy Health colleagues took the time to write heartfelt Christmas cards for patients — small messages of care that mean so much, especially at this time of year.

Thank you to our colleagues, and their families, for your generosity and compassion. You help make Christmas brighter for those in our care.

And because Christmas at Mercy Health is also about joy, connection and a little fun… our teams also took part in a Festive Photo Competition. The creativity has ranged from understated to next-level — but who will take out the title for best Christmas shot? 🎄

Australia’s leading neonatal conference returned to Melbourne in November, hosted by the Royal Women’s Hospital. This year, the Cool Topics in Neonatology conference shifted the spotlight from technology to humanity – highlighting how science and compassion can come together to create brighter outcomes for babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Since its launch by the Women’s Newborn Research Centre in 2003, Cool Topics has been a vibrant space for fresh ideas and thoughtful discussion. This year, conversations focused on the lived experience of babies and families in the NICU.

We’re proud of our very own Dr Natalie Duffy, Neonatologist at Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg, who presented her PhD research. Her question was simple yet profound: “What is the NICU experience like for babies?”

Her study revealed that while babies face sensory overload from bright lights, constant noise and frequent procedures, they thrive during moments of connection. Calm voices, gentle touch and eye contact make all the difference. As Dr Duffy explained, “Every interaction shapes the baby’s emerging sense of self. By allowing infant behaviour to guide our care, we nurture connection and honour the significance of every experience.”

Cool Topics 2025 was a wonderful reminder that in neonatal care, humanity matters just as much as technology. Listening deeply to babies and families is where better outcomes begin.
