Mercy Health and Austin Health welcomed Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas yesterday as she announced the next round of Victoria’s multidisciplinary Women’s Health Clinics.

The expanded clinics will strengthen access to coordinated, specialist care for women across the state, particularly for those managing complex health conditions.

As part of this initiative, Mercy Health will partner with Austin Health to support the new Heidelberg clinic, contributing specialist expertise in endometriosis and pelvic pain, reflecting Mercy Health’s long-standing commitment to improving access to high quality care for women with complex pelvic pain.

The Women’s Health Clinics Model of Care is designed to deliver timely and equitable access to interdisciplinary specialist healthcare for women. It focuses on providing care that is safe, inclusive, culturally appropriate and trauma informed, while ensuring collaborative and well integrated support that connects hospital, primary care and community services.

The newly announced clinics will be located in Ararat, operated by East Grampians Health; Bacchus Marsh, operated by Western Health; Heidelberg, jointly operated by Austin Health and Mercy Hospital for Women; and Prahran, operated by Bayside Health (Alfred Health).

Mercy Health looks forward to working with Austin Health and the Victorian Government to ensure more women can access the care they need, close to home.

Where there’s life, there’s Mercy. Where there’s care, there’s Kailee, one of our incredible home care workers at Mercy Health Home Care Geelong.

"Working in home care is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. I visited a client for the first time, and when I returned, she surprised me with a beautiful painting she had created just for me. It was such a touching gesture and a powerful reminder of the impact we can have on someone’s life – just by showing up with kindness, compassion, and care. Knowing that I made a difference in her day, enough to inspire her creativity, fills me with gratitude and purpose. Moments like these are why I love what I do."

Home care workers enable our clients to stay in their homes for longer by providing them with the extra support they might need to continue living independently. With staff like Kailee in these essential roles, Mercy Health is ready to take on the next 100+ years.

27/02/2026

Two Mercy Health clinicians and University of Melbourne researchers, Associate Professor Fiona Brownfoot and Dr Deb Karmakar, have been awarded a $988,090 NHMRC Ideas Grant to help prevent stillbirths using artificial intelligence.

Their project, “Preventing Stillbirths Globally: Artificial Intelligence Decision Support for Fetal Asphyxia Detection in Labour,” will develop a real-time AI tool to better detect fetal asphyxia — when a baby doesn’t get enough oxygen during labour — a major cause of stillbirth and lifelong disability.

During labour, babies are monitored using a CTG machine (cardiotocography), which tracks the baby’s heart rate and contractions. Using one of the world’s largest digitised CTG datasets — more than 52,000 labour cases worldwide — the team is building an advanced AI system that can analyse these heart rate patterns in real time, identifying subtle warning signs that may be missed.

Early research has already demonstrated state‑of‑the‑art accuracy. The next phase will refine and validate the model and translate it into a software tool that integrates seamlessly with existing CTG systems.

If successful, this technology has the potential to reduce stillbirths, prevent labour-related brain injury, lower unnecessary emergency caesareans, and improve maternity care worldwide. Congratulations to Associate Professor Brownfoot and Dr Karmakar on leading research with such a global impact.

This Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we’re encouraging everyone to pay attention to even the smallest changes in their bodies.

For Mercy Health patient Irene, a tiny lump in her belly button was the only sign of stage four ovarian cancer. She almost ignored it, but choosing to see her GP made all the difference.

There’s no screening test for ovarian cancer, and symptoms can be vague. According to Cancer Australia, nearly 2,000 Australians are diagnosed each year, and fewer than half survive beyond five years largely because the disease is found late.

Common symptoms include:
• Persistent bloating or an increase in abdominal size
• Abdominal or pelvic pain
• Feeling full quickly
• Needing to urinate more often or urgently

There are other possible symptoms too, and the key thing is, if anything feels persistent, unusual or troubling, please see your doctor and get it checked.
