Should your teen stick to one sport? 🤔

Most parents feel the pressure to choose early…
But at the same time, they can see their child juggling too much ⚖️

So what’s actually right?

Here’s the truth 👇
Multi-sport athletes are:
✔️ healthier
✔️ more coordinated
✔️ less likely to burn out

But knowing what to keep, what to pause, and how to guide that decision isn’t always easy.

That’s where physio comes in 👇
At High Line Active, we assess:
🏃‍♂️ strength
📈 training load
📏 growth stage
🩺 injury history

So you can make the right call.

If your teen is dealing with niggles, growing pains, or doing “too much” ⚠️
A targeted assessment can help guide the next step.

If you want to stay active, strong, and confident as you get older you don’t need harder training you need smarter, individualised training.

That’s where small group Pilates and strength classes make all the difference.

In our clinic:
• People move better with targeted, personalised programs
• Small groups mean hands on guidance and safer technique
• Strength, balance, and mobility improve faster with consistent, structured sessions
• Training with others keeps you motivated and accountable
• And for golfers and tennis players; better rotation, balance, and core control = better performance and fewer niggles

This isn’t generic group fitness.
It’s tailored, physio led training designed around your goals; whether that’s staying pain‑free, keeping up with the grandkids, or continuing to play the sports you love like tennis and golf.

If you’re wanting to stay active, strong, and confident as you age, small group Pilates is one of the most effective ways to do it.

Move well. Stay strong. Keep playing the sport you love.

Muscle cramps: it’s not just dehydration

If you’ve ever cramped during training or a game, you’re not alone.

Exercise-associated muscle cramps (EAMCs) are painful, involuntary contractions that usually affect heavily used muscles like the calves, hamstrings, and quads.

🧠 The key shift in understanding:
Cramps are not just about dehydration or electrolytes.

Current evidence shows they are primarily a neuromuscular issue, driven by fatigue.

When fatigue builds up:
→ the nervous system loses balance
→ muscles become overactive
→ cramping occurs

⚠️ It’s often a combination of factors:
▪️ high or unfamiliar training loads
▪️ poor conditioning
▪️ fatigue or lack of sleep
▪️ previous injury

🏃‍♂️ What to do if you cramp:
✔️ gently stretch the muscle (most effective)
✔️ stop and rest
✔️ small amounts of pickle juice may help via a neural reflex

❌ What doesn’t help in the moment:
✖️ sports drinks (too slow to absorb)
✖️ “just hydrate more”
✖️ quinine (not recommended due to risks)

🎯 Prevention is key:
At Highline Active, we focus on:
✔️ managing training schedules
✔️ building strength and conditioning
✔️ improving neuromuscular control
✔️ individualising programs based on the athlete

Because cramps aren’t random, they’re a signal your system is under stress.

🚨 New Research in Youth Athlete Injury

A 26‑year MRI study following healthy people from age 8 to 34 found something surprising: The fastest changes in lumbar discs happen during adolescence

🔍 Key findings from the study
Disc degeneration was rare in childhood (5% at age 8)… but jumped to 48% by age 19 and 72% by age 34.
The biggest Disc and boney changes happened between ages 11–19, during growth spurts.

Teens who already had more disc changes at 19 were more likely to report low back pain later in life.

🏃‍♂️ Why this matters for young athletes

Growth spurts + high training loads = a period where the spine is more vulnerable to rapid change. This doesn’t mean sport is harmful; but it does mean early assessment and smart load management are essential.

💡 What we focus on at High Line Active
Identifying early signs of overload
Strengthening around the spine and hips
Technique optimisation during rapid growth phases
Building resilient movement patterns that last into adulthood

📣 For parents & teens
If your teen is training hard, growing fast, or mentioning back tightness or pain; even occasionally it’s worth getting things checked early. Small adjustments now can make a big difference later.

How much gym training is too much for teens?

It depends on their sport load, growth stage, and how they’re actually moving in the gym. Some teens are doing too much. Some aren’t doing enough.

Most just don’t have a program that fits them.
That’s where injuries or plateaus tend to happen.
The safest place to start is a strength assessment.

We look at movement, training load, and goals then build a plan that supports performance without burnout.
If you’re not sure where your teen sits, that’s exactly what we’re here for.
