As part of the against Gender-Based Violence, our team came together for a shared lunch last week - a moment to connect, reflect, and prioritise collective care in the vital work we do at the intersection of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) and family violence.

On Friday, staff from our Community Services programs joined the Walk Against Gendered Violence in Melbourne, standing in solidarity to call for a future free from violence.

Together, we reaffirm our commitment to creating safer communities and supporting those impacted by family violence. đź’ś

Did you know Aboriginal women are still significantly overrepresented in both experiences of family violence, and in criminalisation linked to substance use, reflecting ongoing system wide failure to uphold safety and justice.

We have been working on building our Aboriginal book library in the Children’s Centre at our Lower Plenty Resi' Rehab. We now have almost 50 books in our collection. We are reading our way through them with the children, and everyone is enjoying engaging with the stories as we learn about and celebrate our Indigenous culture. We will continue to build this resource over time and look forward to sharing these stories for years to come.

Board member profile

Jarvis/Odyssey Board member/1 year on Board

Role with Odyssey:
My role at Odyssey is a Board member with a cultural and lived experience lens as a graduate of the Odyssey program.

I enjoy the diversity of the board and work alongside board members who have served for decades. It's a great learning experience with so much wisdom and knowledge. I have a strong passion for the Alcohol and other drug (AOD) sector and am proud to be an Odyssey board member.

I work at the First People's Assembly as a Northeast Senior Regional Engagement Officer. I do presentations and events relaying information from the assembly to the community. I take community aspirations back to the assembly and do presentations at schools, prisons, and rehabs to name a few. I have been with the Assembly for 3 years. I love playing my part in the fight for First Nations People and caring for community and being a voice for community and following in the footsteps of strong leaders and advocates who have walked before me.

I am excited about the future opportunities that will come from Treaty that will better the living conditions of First Nations People in Victoria and the domino effect this will have on the country.

Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the first day of 16 days of Activism against gender-based violence. The 16 days of activism is a global campaign with the focus this year on 'Changemakers', showing initiatives and steps taken by both individuals and organisation's to address violence in different parts of the community, those who are changing attitudes, behaviours, systems and lives.

At Odyssey we know that in the context of family violence, substance use can increase the frequency and severity of harm, heighten risk and be weaponised to exert control. Not everyone who uses substances perpetrates family violence and not all people experiencing family violence use substances - but the intersections are clear.

As part of the 16 days of activism we will be sharing statistics about family violence and the intersection with substance use.

Odyssey is proud to be a vocal and active 'changemaker' at the intersection of substance use and family violence.

Last week, our Lower Plenty Residential Rehabilitation program proudly celebrated its 2026 Graduation. Our graduates have completed the residential program and lived in community for 12 months taking place in study or work and have not used alcohol or drugs. They have come back for graduation to share their stories. This year we had six individuals who have journeyed through our therapeutic community and who graduated.

The event was a wonderful celebration hosted by residents alongside our Program Manager Tim, our Senior Aboriginal Cultural Advisor Daniel and with our CEO Dr Stefan Gruenert and Board Chair Jenny Macklin presenting the graduation certificates. The graduation was attended by members of the Odyssey Board and Executive team. Guests were treated to a vibrant performance by the Djarlo Dance Group and each graduate delivered a heartfelt speech before receiving their graduation certificate.

There were many moving moments as graduates shared their stories of recovery and the profound changes in their lives. The celebration was a powerful reminder of why we do the work we do, and the incredible impact it has.
