I love my work.

But the job …. can be hectic.

There is little time to reflect…

I’m always running late, it seems like I am always over promising and undeliverable.. and I admit that recently it has been quite difficult for me to appreciate the impact of our partnerships (patient-child-clinician)…

And then….

A child presents me with a Xmas gift.

Handmade bedazzled bookmark (I love sparkles) and a poem. … and my heart is warmed..

Thank you sweetheart.

Being your doctor is a privilege.

You have a extraordinary mind and a beautiful heart.

And today …you have helped me…

Today I’m drawn to the bond between dads and their children …

I followed my father into the practice of medicine…I observed his example of service to his community, the commitment he made to help other people, the joy it brought him to learn about them…

He taught me that knowing my stuff is only a small part of being a ‘good doctor’ - if you truly wish to help others, if you intend to serve your community with your smarts (or whatever it is you can do better that someone else) to improve the health and wellbeing of other people then you need to get comfortable with the human condition..

What makes us human? — our capacity to learn, love, laugh. (Now I sound like a cat poster)

But … the one thing that the cat poster will never say..is that the unspoken reality of being human is loss.

Loss of health, loss of memory, loss of connection and eventually loss of our life.

So … today I post these two lovely reels because they had me in tears .. being human is the best and the worst 🤔😔😍🤓🥰

So let’s celebrate the people who travel this one wild crazy life we get to live …

To all the Dads that come to see me (or are sent into see me - with strict instructions 😜) … you rock!! The love you hold in your heart for your child is extraordinary and it is an anchor for your child .. xx

In my job, I get to hang out with awesome young people on a daily basis. Young people whose passage through childhood has been bumpy.

It has been a particularly difficult couple of years.

Today I am reminded that these young people are parented by freaking awesome humans

Several of the children who saw me today, needed extra, extra effort, extra resources, extra compassion, extra patience, extra advocacy…

And every single time, without any hesitation, the parent stepped up.

You might think well of course. It’s just what a parent does.

BUT if you knew how much each one of them has poured into their child, then you would also be awestruck.

My message to those that I have seen today is I see you, and you inspire me.
