It's been 6 years since I commenced working with students in schools. Utilising arts therapy to assist students in expressing themselves 😜, figuring out what's going on their life 🀯, a space to feel safe and seen🧐. Sometimes it's just to offload without the pressure of having to make eye contact 🫣. Sometimes it's a quiet space without a word spoken 🀐, making together and leaving all of life's troubles at the door.

In all seriousness, it's been an ongoing process of learning for me and I feel blessed that I am entrusted by schools and these wonderful humans.

My little 6-year anniversary of walking alongside students in this way prompted me to tally the number of students I am actively working with in schools at the moment. I am shocked to tell you that it has reached 47 this week 😲.

An inspirational leader that was passionate about educating people about the importance of their choices and the impact that they have in the world. We have a responsibility.

I’ve been working on an exciting collaboration with the Launceston City Council, Laurel House and Stompin Dance! 🎨πŸ₯πŸŽπŸ€Ήβ€β™‚️ It’s been in planning for months, lots of back and forth and discussions it’s often felt like a pipe dream. But over the last 2 weeks it’s all been rolled out. With the support of 2 very passionate and caring Counsellors from Laurel House, Gabe and Daisy from Stompin and and Colin from the council, I have facilitated 2 workshops over the last 2 weeks with a total of 16 teens and it has been invigorating πŸŒˆβ„οΈπŸͺ·πŸ„πŸ€. A special shout out to Megan that co-facilitated with me on Sunday, it was so great working with you.

The council had a vision and a core part of that was to request input from young people in Launceston to inform their child safe policy. Lucky me, I got to do what I love best and engage with a group of teens in a creative arts workshop and that content will then inform the policy.

A couple of times I just caught myself captivated by the participants creativity without hesitation and I just smiled. Here’s what stood out for me across the 2 workshops.

🫟 the majority of teens had experienced a gut instinct that something was wrong at some stage in their life and that instinct was right.

🫟 that given the opportunity many teens are able to identify moments where they have felt unsafe and strategies that they use to resolve that.

🫟 most teens feel moments where their safety is compromised on a regular basis

🫟 most teens were able to more clearly recognise people and places that felt safe in their life at the end of the workshop.

🫟 some of them felt strongly enough about the importance of the role of that safe person in their life they wanted to tell them.

🫟 listening to the depth of understanding that some I of them had about how unsafe women in our community feel gave me hope for change.

🫟 teenagers are just awesome. They are filled with unique ideas and watching their creative process was inspiring.

I’m glad the ball is rolling on this policy and I’m glad that I was asked to assist.
