Wildtender Birth

Wildtender Birth Birth Attendant & Postpartum Doula on the Gold Coast, AU. It is my honour to serve families on their Hello and Welcome! I am so glad you’re here.

My name is Hannah, and I’m a Birth Attendant & Postpartum Doula on the Gold Coast, Australia. As I continue to grow and expand my offerings locally, I’m pleased to share that my website will be live soon with full details on packages accordingly. As a Postpartum Doula, I exist to support and deeply nurture women during what is undoubtedly a sacred, significant transition into postpartum and mothering life. I believe that by empowering mothers, we empower families; and I work to incorporate the latest in evidence-based information alongside time-tested, cross cultural practices. As a Birthkeeper, I’m passionate about facilitating positive birth education and supporting a birth plan that keeps your family at the centre. Whether that means private childbirth education classes and being on call for your family during the birth, or my physical presence on the day, I wholeheartedly believe that a positive and empowered birth can have a profound impact on the postpartum period & your journey into parenthood. I’ve proudly studied Birth Mentoring and Doula Training through Birthing From Within, an organisation I choose to align with based on their holistic philosophy around childbirth education & support for the birthing woman that is not attached to any specific outcome. The Birthing from Within philosophy encourages pregnant women to integrate and connect with the ancient, ‘inner knowing’, as well as the evidence-based, ‘modern knowing’ we are much more accustomed to learning about in conventional antenatal classes. I am here to help you create a mindset for birth and parenthood that is empowering, holistic and balanced. If you’re pregnant or looking for support in your childbearing year, I’d love to see how I might be able to assist.

In case anyone was looking for more reasons to love , she words so beautifully one if my most favourite historical midwife/birth stories of all time, so perfect to read as I settle down for the night this Christmas Eve with my family. ✨

“The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, ‘when you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the birth stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him, but if it is a girl, let her live’. The midwives however were followers of God and so did not do what the King of Egypt had told them to do. Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, ‘why have you done this?!’ The midwives answered, (this is my favourite!) ‘Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women, they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive’...
they were such badasses! Defying the King of Egypt, Their slave master and oppressor! It takes courage, resolve and faith to be so bold as to stand up against such an authority... midwives are still doing it today- defending and supporting women and babies despite what is expected of them under repressive governance. This Christmas, I salute you midwives (and all birthkeepers!) 🤟🏼✊🏼

Wishing you all a restful holiday season. For me, this is a time to remember the birth of Jesus and reflect on his life.... also, what a woman Mary was, giving birth outside the system 😄... “

To all my birthing families, fellow doulas, friends and kindred spirits, Merry Christmas from my family to yours✨🎄💗

I will be spending the next few weeks offline. If you have any questions, wanna chat or would like more information on my packages & availability, please email or call me at hannah@wildtender.com.au - I’ll be back online early December!

I want to keep my eyes on what’s most important, I want to practice what I preach to the mamas I work with, to choose life even when it’s hard or scary as a business owner!

I’ll be back more focused, more grounded and more ready to reengage, but for now, I’m heeding the call.

May we be kind, focus on the beauty, magic & wonder still so completely covering this world, and bring it into being with our actions.

Prayers up! Hannah

No matter where you stand, my heart hurts for Queenslanders today. I’m so sorry to my unvaccinated friends, it is so wrong what is happening.

In moments of deep sorrow, I am always brought back to this one. I hope it moves you today.

My latest project is this umbilical cord burn box, a handcrafted item made of pure camphor laurel and a lick of natural shellac. Cord burning is one of my favourite birth rituals and a beautiful way to bring presence and awareness to this moment, where baby is seperate from their placenta and mama for the first time!

Cord burning is definitely not a new 'fad', in fact is was practiced in old China where it was believed to help move the Qui (Chi) from the placenta to the baby. Cord burning was also actually relied upon in Sumatra after the 2004 tsunami when hospitals were swept away along with medical and sterilizing equipment. Midwives were taught the old practice which saved the lives of many babies.

Dr Joseph Cadel writes, “By heating the cord and driving the last of the blood through there you are giving a profoundly tonic treatment for the baby who has just run a marathon…. Cord burning reduces the risk of bleeding and entry of infections. You are warming digestion which will reduce the tendency for jaundice, besides just creating a strong baby which means a good nurser.”

The first batch of these boxes will be ready next week and will retail at $55+$10 shipping for the box alone, or $65+$10 shipping including the candles. These candles are pure beeswax and made locally by creator

Such a beautiful moment captured of this mama in transition.

Transition is the phase between Established Labour and the Birth, where the cervix dilates from 7 or 8 centimetres throught to 10 centimetres or full dilatation. Contractions are at their most powerful and intense, and come close together. Transition can be only a few contractions long, or it might last for a couple of hours.

I will often explore the process of transition in quite a bit of detail in our prenatals, as during transition our body goes through some serious changes, and it’s the point where our body spontaneously releases nor-adrenaline. This is a great thing! But can feel overwhelming without a deeper understanding of its significance physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.

The release of this hormone in the presence of the existing chemical cocktail swirling around in the woman's blood stream triggers the expulsive contractions which will push the baby out. Nor-adrenaline 'wakes us up' at the most intense point in the labour process, and so has often (I think unfairly) been called the ‘crisis point’ for mamas.

Being prepared for these surges of nor-adrenaline can help us rest assured when the time comes, as when transition arrives, it means baby is close! Everything is working as it should✨

October 15 is pregnancy and infant loss awareness day. Today we honour and remember all the babies born sleeping, those we carried but never held, those we held but couldn’t take home, those who came home but couldn’t stay. 🤍

“I carried you every second of your life, and I will love you every second of mine”

On the fence about hiring a doula? There are so many reasons why investing in labour support can completely transform your experience of pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

Many well-documented studies support the benefits of having continuous support from a doula during childbirth. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists stated that, “one of the most effective tools to improve labor & delivery outcomes is the continuous presence of support personnel, such as a doula… continuous one-on-one support during labor & delivery was associated with improved patient satisfaction & a statistically significant reduction in the rate of cesarean delivery”.

It’s not only about birth outcomes though. Other benefits include:

-Doulas know their way around the hospital. A doula will be familiar with the policies & resources available at local hospitals. We can inform the couple about tools they can request that can be helpful in labor, such as hot and cold packs, yoga balls, extra pillows, etc. that the parents may not otherwise know they have access to.
-Doulas speak the language of labor. Oftentimes doctors & nurses answer questions or explain what’s going on in medical terminology. A doula makes sure both the partner and birthing person understand what’s happening and what their options are, which can decrease anxiety and make for a more positive experience.
-Doulas can give partners a break. A doula’s presence allows partners to get bite to eat, a breath of fresh air, or a nap – without feeling guilty for leaving the birthing person’s side. These breaks give the partner a chance to recharge, while ensuring that the birthing person feels supported and cared for through the entire experience.
-Doulas keep partners calm so they can experience childbirth to its fullest. Childbirth can be an overwhelming experience for both the person giving birth and for partners. A doula not only provides emotional support to the person giving birth, but also a critical source of reassurance for partners, allowing them to have the best possible experience of the arrival of the baby as well.

Anyone who has read knows THAT recipe, a traditional Chinese postpartum stew made with black vinegar and pork trotters. After postpartum clinic this morning, we tried our own variation of this in a pressure cooker, using organic pigs trotters, ginger, wood ear mushrooms, purple mountain yams, potatoes and watercress. Topped with sauerkraut and toasted black sesame seeds, this was really really delicious, and also incredibly warming and tonifying for the kidneys.

The ingredients used in pork trotter stew are very nutritious, specifically chosen to help the new mother to recover. Calcium in the bones of the pork knuckles are dissolved during the cooking process – a major nutritional value of the dish is to replenish the loss of calcium in pregnancy. Moreover, not only is ginger rich in Vitamin C helping to strengthen the mother’s immune system, it also has the function of removing the ‘wind’ known as ‘fong’ in Cantonese generated during childbirth and when the body is at its weakest. Ginger also helps with lactation 🙌🏼

I don’t always get the chance to cook like this - food is only one part of providing deep support and care for new mamas in our culture - so it was a lovely way to lean into the rich cultural practices of , the traditional Cantonese practice of postpartum confinement ✨

My postpartum pelvic steam stools are slowly making their way into the world! I love this capture by the beautiful Holly from , in her amazing onsen style bathroom😍

My first wholesale order is on its way to a very special practitioner, Claudia of .birth.services - Claudia has been instrumental in perfecting the design for everyday use, and making it something that I felt could actually scale without compromising the quality or craftsmanship of each piece! Every stool has been made with so much love and intention, I’m so happy with how they have turned out, each stool with its own graining and slight differences due to the nature of such a piece!

Made from locally sourced, Australian camphor laurel and AA grade marine ply, these stools are approximately 16” / 30 cm tall. At this height the stool helps open up the pelvis for an optimal session, and the legs are set wide enough to allow a large pot or even an electric burner to sit safely underneath.

Depending on your selection, each stool has been treated with either tung oil or polyurethane to provide protection from the steam in a way that preserves its toxin free, environmentally friendly status. Unsealed wood can lead to toxic mould buildup!

Yoni steaming is an integral part of traditional women’s medicine from all around the world. Although the knowledge survives in pockets, as the western model of healthcare became more prevalent the practice was lost to many of us. Thankfully, it is now being rediscovered and women around the world are rediscovering the benefits.

I am in the process of setting a store up on Etsy, but in the interim, you are able to order from myself directly via DM, at the price of $170. They are available in either a red cedar stain, a dark stain (pictured), or a natural finish.
