Care doesn’t start on the ward... It begins at the drop-off zone. 💛

For many patients arriving at Robina Hospital, the drop-off zone is one of the busiest and most emotionally charged places. It can be a place where nerves run high, first impressions are formed, and care begins.

Operational Services Officer Luke is often one of the first people patients meet.

“I’ve got to know so many patients over time,” Luke said.

“Our regulars all know me, and I always make sure to remember everyone’s names.”

Recognisable by his signature Akubra 🤠, Luke says the role is all about easing the experience for others.

“I really love helping people move through their day with a little less stress,” he said.

From a friendly hello to practical support in the car park, Luke’s work is a reminder that care doesn’t just happen inside hospital walls.

Elizabeth signed up as a volunteer with Gold Coast Health following a gentle nudge from her daughter.

“We were supposed to volunteer together. I came, but she didn’t, and here I am15 years later,” she laughed.

What has kept Elizabeth turning up year after year? For her, it’s the people.

“The people you work with make a huge difference to your life,” she said.

“My time here also lets me step away from my own troubles and really put things into perspective.”

Thank you, Elizabeth. Your kindness makes a real difference. 💕

We are thrilled to announce Dr Michael Aitken as our Robina Hospital and Tugun Satellite Health Centre Clinical Director for Emergency!

Dr Aitken has been our Robina Medical Director since 2020 and with Gold Coast Health for 20 years.

As Robina Hospital continues to grow, Dr Aitken has taken on the new role of Clinical Director to support advancing emergency care in the community.

"When Robina opened it was a much smaller and limited Emergency Department, but now we've grown into one of the busiest ED's in the state," Dr Aitken said.

"I'm really proud of what we have already achieved - opening our own dedicated paediatric zone in ED, our triage upgrade and additional beds.

"Now it's about establishing our key priorities and the direction we are going in."

Congratulations, Dr Aitken. 👏

👩‍ “It wasn’t what patients had lost that stayed with me – it was what remained.”

Nurse Unit Manager for the Geriatric Evaluation Management (GEM) Unit, Elizabeth Soleil-Moudiky-joh, had a values-led approach in shaping the final stage of H Block at Gold Coast University Hospital.

“My interest in geriatrics began in neurorehabilitation, where I first saw the longer journey patients take after acute care,” Elizabeth said.

“What stayed with me was the importance of dignity – especially for people living with dementia.

The new 24-bed GEM Unit on the Lower Ground floor, opening in the first quarter of 2026, will complete the 70-bed H Block facility which welcomed its first patients in September 2025.

One of its key features is the independent living bedroom – a space that allows patients to practise everyday tasks as part of their recovery.

“It’s unique to our unit and offers a home-like space where patients can safely practise everyday tasks such as making a cup of tea, preparing a simple meal and following familiar routines,” Elizabeth said.

“Clinicians are close by, but the focus is on giving people the confidence to reconnect with their everyday activities.”

Jigsaw puzzles are connecting staff at Robina Hospital. 🧩

Clinical Nurse Nicky Miller (pictured left) established the initiative as a conversation starter and to give staff an alternative to scrolling through their phones during lunch.

A resident of Austinville, where she helps organise the village’s annual Spring Fair, Nicky has brought a little bit of country community spirit to the cafeteria 🫶.

“Puzzles help me relax and bring calmness to my break by keeping my hands and mind occupied,” she said.

“We recently completed a puzzle in the Nursing and Midwifery Staffing Unit tea-room and it was so much fun, I wanted to bring the idea to the wider hospital.”

It took only a week for staff to complete the first puzzle, proving the initiative is a perfect fit. 💯

When flooding cut off the community of Clermont, Registered Nurse Alex Evans, who works at Robina Hospital, didn’t hesitate.

“I got a message asking if any critical care nurses were willing to be deployed to help out with the flooding in North Queensland and I was happy to help out,” Alex said.

Within hours, he was on a plane to Mackay and then on the road west, ready to support a town heavily impacted by floodwaters.

For nearly a week, he worked long days alongside the local team treating everything from barbed‑wire injuries to flood‑related infections.

“It was really great to be able to serve the community – that’s why I got into nursing in the first place,” he said.

Alex also witnessed the resilience of a farming and mining community rebuilding after losing fences, livestock and, in some cases, everything they owned.

Back home on the Gold Coast, his young sons were proud that “Daddy helps people”, and so are we. 👏

A simple good morning can change someone’s entire day. 💛

When operational services officer, Devie Dejando says the people are the most joyful part of job, it’s no surprise she took home the Community First Award at Gold Coast Health’s 2025 Golden Gala Value Awards.

“The people are why I love what I do. They’re amazing,” Devie said.

Devie works across Environmental Services at Robina Health Precinct and Campus Alpha, supporting areas including oral health, surgery, Digital Training Centre and the persistent pain clinic.

She helps prepare spaces, so they are calm, welcoming and ready, not just for staff to do their work, but for patients to feel safe the moment they walk through the door.

For Devie, her work has always been about the small, human moments. 🥰

“Sometimes people get nervous about their appointment. But, if you greet them with kindness, even just a simple good morning, it can really uplift them,” she said.

“You build these connections everywhere and you realise that you’re truly making a difference.”

Winning the 2025 Dean Hamilton Nursing Excellence Award is a full-circle moment for clinical nurse Laura Gibson.

From the moment she arrived at the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) as an enrolled nurse in 2016, Laura said that Dean was respectful, kind and supportive.

He generously shared his knowledge and experience and encouraged Laura throughout her university studies and in the early stages of her career.

Dean has never been far from Laura’s thoughts since he passed away in 2020, especially when she acted in his old role as MAU Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC).

“I constantly think of Dean,” she said. “CNC was his role, and it makes me very proud to think that he would be proud of me.”

“It means everything to me to be recognised in honour of Dean as I hold him in such high regard.”

The nominations Laura received from her colleagues for this year’s excellence award echo Laura’s memories of Dean.

Laura is described as a positive role model and a trusted mentor who demonstrates clinical excellence, compassion and integrity every day.

“Laura is loved by patients and colleagues alike. She’s passionate, innovative, an excellent role model and a huge influence on ward culture,” say the nominations.

The Dean Hamilton Nursing Excellence Award was established by the MAU in 2020 to honour Dean’s legacy.

Each week, Sharon is reminded of the impact she makes as a volunteer as countless patients and staff thank her for guiding them through Robina Hospital. 🏥

“Every day I work here is a highlight because I get so many thank you's,” says the former accountant.

“I’ve never been thanked so much.” 🥰

One of Sharon's special memories as a volunteer is helping an anxious nurse find her way to her uniform fitting.

“It was nice to help her, as I know she will go on to help so many others.”

Thank you, Sharon, for the warmth and kindness you bring to Robina Hospital.

Just moved from New Zealand?

Even though we’re neighbours, our immunisation schedules are different.

While your child may have had all their immunisations on time in New Zealand,
they might not be up to date with the Queensland immunisation schedule.

Talk to your immunisation provider or local doctor to find out if there are any
gaps and to create a catch-up schedule to get your child up to date with their
immunisations.
