Dressed in his Valentine's Day best, meet the doctor in the business of fixing broken hearts. ❤️‍🩹

Dr Ravinder Batra is the Clinical Director of the Catheter Laboratory at the Gold Coast University Hospital and has been a cardiologist (working with hearts!) since 1997.

On a day all about love, Dr Batra shares some interesting insight into 'Broken Heart Syndrome'.

That's right - it's a real thing! 😲

Its official name is 'Takotsubo cardiomyopathy' - a condition predominantly triggered by emotional or physical stress like the loss of a loved one or relationship issues.

Those who experience the syndrome have sudden and severe chest pain, mimicking the symptoms of a heart attack.

"It's interesting because this condition is more common in females, with about 89 percent of cases being female," he said.

"However, any problems with the heart require thorough investigation. We check to make sure important elements like the heart's rhythm and arteries are functioning as normal, ruling out anything else ."

But the good news?

"If a patient is stable, with no blood pressure or heart rate issues, if their lungs are functioning as normal, we observe them closely for a short period of time. Once we have confirmed the diagnosis and if they remain stable, we can discharge them with a check-up in four weeks to ensure the heart function has returned to normal," Dr Batra said.

So, it turns out - time really can help heal a broken heart! ❤️

Last night our team attended the Careers Expo held by Marymount College.

We were able to showcase the diversity in roles within our practice and provide advice on study pathways and the futures they can open up.

It was a pleasure to engage with so many enthusiastic individuals and we are excited for what the future holds for the students of Marymount College!
