The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Heatwave Warning in the coming days, for one or more weather districts in Victoria.

It’s important to plan ahead and make sure you and your family stay safe during periods of warmer weather.

Stay cool. Use air conditioning and/or a fan. Wear light and loose clothing. Keep skin wet, using a spray bottle or damp sponge and by taking cool showers. If you can’t keep cool at home, think about where you can go on hot days to cool down such as public pools or air-conditioned buildings.

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Keep drinking fluids before you feel thirsty, especially if outdoors and performing physical activity.

Check in with family, friends and neighbours. Let people know you are OK and check in with those at increased risk or who may need your support. Look out for those who might be more affected by extreme heat, like the those over the age of 65 years, babies and young children, pregnant women, people with acute or chronic health problems, those who are socially isolated or those with limited ways to keep cool.

Plan ahead. Watch the weather forecast in your area and plan activities at cooler times of day.

Hot cars kill. Never leave kids, adults, or pets in cars. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes.

If needed, call Nurse-On-Call on 1300 60 60 24 or contact Victorian Virtual Emergency Department at https://www.vved.org.au/.

In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).

The 16 Days of Activism May Be Over - But Our Commitment Continues Every Day

Each year, from 25 November to 10 December, communities across the world mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. At Robinvale District Health Services (RDHS), we joined this global movement by sharing daily reflections from our staff on what respect means to them and how everyday actions can help build safer, more equal communities.

Over the 16 days, our team of students, clinicians, support staff, managers and leaders - spoke about consent, equality, child safety, stereotypes, teamwork, cultural respect, the importance of being heard, and the power of calling out harmful behaviors. Although each message was unique, they all carried out a shared theme: respect is at the heart of preventing violence.

As a health organisation, we see first-hand the impact that gender inequality and violence can have on individuals, families, and communities. That is why our commitment does not start on Day 1, and it does not end on Day 16. Respect, safety and support are values we practice every day, in every service we provide.

While the awareness campaign has officially ended for 2025, the work of prevention, and the importance of community conversations, continues throughout the year. We encourage everyone in our community to keep reflecting on what respect looks like in daily life: in our homes, workplaces, sporting clubs, schools, and online spaces.

Day 16 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

On the final day of the 16 Days of Activism, we share a message from our CEO, who reaffirms our organisation’s commitment to standing against gender-based violence and supporting those impacted. She reminds us that “Everyone deserves safety, respect and dignity always.”.

Her leadership reflects what women in decision-making roles can achieve when given the opportunity to lead with strength, compassion and vision. As we close these 16 days, we recognise that our commitment does not end here. Promoting respect, safety and equality is part of the everyday work we do with our clients, communities and staff.

We continue to support victim survivors and remain focused on prevention efforts throughout the year. We also welcome opportunities to collaborate with like-minded organisation's to strengthen community awareness and promote safe, respectful relationships.

Day 15 of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

Today, Estelle, our Speech Pathologist, shared that respect means being heard and not being discriminated against. Her words echo the national conversation that real change starts when every voice, especially those often left out of the room, is included, valued and leads the conversation.

Recent national reports have reminded us that violence is a national emergency, and that real progress only happens when every voice is included from the beginning, not as an afterthought. Respect is about elevating those most affected and ensuring community-led voices guide our decisions, our actions and our systems.

As we continue the 16 Days of Activism, we stand with every organisation and every advocate working towards safety, equality and respect. Because respect isn’t just a value, it’s the foundation of a future free from violence.
