🎄 Managing Stress & Mental Wellbeing This Christmas 🎄
The Christmas period can be a joyful time, but it can also bring stress, pressure, and emotional challenges. Looking after your mental health is just as important as celebrating with family and friends.
Here are some tips to support your wellbeing this festive season:
💆‍♀️ Take time for yourself – Even a short walk, a cup of tea, or a few quiet minutes can help you recharge.
📝 Plan ahead – Organise shopping, meals, and appointments to reduce last-minute stress.
💬 Reach out – Talk to friends, family, or a trusted professional if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
🍎 Maintain healthy habits – Keep up with sleep, exercise, and balanced meals where possible.
❌ Set realistic expectations – Remember, it’s okay if everything isn’t perfect.
🙏 Practice gratitude – Focusing on the positives can improve mood and perspective.
If you’re struggling with stress, anxiety, or low mood this festive season, don’t hesitate to speak with a GP or mental health professional. Support is available, and reaching out is a sign of strength.
Wishing everyone a safe, calm, and joyful Christmas from all of us at Alma Street Medical. 💙

☀️ Summer Sun Safety Tips – Protect Your Skin! ☀️

Summer is here, and while the sunshine is wonderful, it’s important to remember that Queensland has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. Protecting your skin now will reduce serious health issues later.

Here are some sun-smart tips:

🧢 Cover up – Wear hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing.
🌞 Use sunscreen – Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ at least 20 minutes before going outside, and reapply every 2 hours.
⛱ Seek shade – Especially between 10am–4pm, when UV rays are strongest.
💧 Stay hydrated – The sun and heat can quickly dehydrate you.
🩺 Check your skin – Regularly look for new or changing moles, spots, or lesions, and see your GP if you notice anything unusual.

At Alma Street Medical, we’re here to help with skin checks and advice to keep you safe this summer. Book an appointment and give your skin the attention it deserves!

Stay sun-smart and enjoy the season safely! 🌴☀️

☀️🌼 Welcome to Summer! 🌼☀️

Summer has officially arrived, bringing warmer days, outdoor fun, and plenty of sunshine! As we embrace the new season, it’s also a great time to check in on your health and wellbeing.

Here are a few simple reminders to help you stay safe and healthy this summer:

🌞 Protect your skin - Slip, slop, slap, seek, and slide — sunscreen, hats, shade, and protective clothing are your best defence against UV damage.
💧 Stay hydrated - Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially when spending time outdoors or being active.
🚶‍♂️ Keep moving - Early mornings and evenings are perfect for walks and exercise while avoiding the hottest part of the day.
😴 Prioritise rest - Heat can make you feel more tired — listen to your body and rest when needed.
🦟 Watch out for bites and stings - Use insect repellent and keep an eye out for mosquito-prone areas.

If you have health questions or need to book a summer check-up, our team is here to help.

Wishing our community a safe, healthy, and sun-filled summer! ☀️🌴

🎄✨ Staying Healthy This Festive Season 🎅

The festive season is a wonderful time for family, food, and celebration — but it can also be a busy period where health routines slip. Here are some simple ways to look after yourself while still enjoying the yourself:

🍎 Keep balance in mind - It’s perfectly okay to indulge, but try to include fresh fruit, vegetables, and water throughout your day.
🚶‍♀️ Stay active - A short walk, a swim, or some time outdoors can help reduce stress and keep your energy levels up.
💧 Hydrate - Warmer weather and busy days can lead to dehydration. Keep a water bottle close by — especially if enjoying festive drinks.
😴 Prioritise rest - Late nights add up. Try to maintain a regular sleep routine where you can.
🎁 Look after your mental health - The holidays aren’t easy for everyone. Reach out to friends, family, or your GP if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

🩺 Plan ahead for medications and appointments
With altered clinic hours over Christmas, make sure you have enough medication and have booked any needed check-ups.

Most importantly, enjoy the season, take things at your own pace, and check in with your wellbeing along the way.

Wishing our community a healthy, safe, and joyful festive season. 🎅✨

💙 Lung Cancer Awareness Month

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and support those in our community affected by lung cancer.

Lung cancer can affect anyone, even people who have never smoked. Early signs are often subtle, which is why paying attention to symptoms and prioritising screening is so important.

🩺 Symptoms to look out for:
👉A persistent cough that won’t go away
👉Shortness of breath
👉Chest pain
👉Coughing up blood
👉Unexplained weight loss or fatigue

If you notice any of these symptoms, please don’t delay speaking with your GP — early diagnosis can save lives.

🌟 The National Lung Cancer Screening Program is here 🌟

Starting July 2025, eligible Australians aged 50–70 with a history of smoking can access free lung cancer screening through Medicare.
Screening uses a low-dose CT scan to detect lung cancer early — often before symptoms appear — when treatment is most effective.

✔️ If you’ve smoked for at least 30 pack-years (e.g., 1 pack/day for 30 years or 2 packs/day for 15 years) and currently smoke or quit within the last 10 years, you may be eligible.
✔️ Early detection saves lives — research shows screening can find up to 70% of lung cancers early.

👉 Talk to your GP today about whether you qualify and how to get referred for your free scan.

Let’s work together to spread awareness, encourage early detection, and support better lung health across our community. 💙
