Last week the CROSS Asia Pacific and CROSS Recruit team enjoyed attending the Rockhampton Chamber of Commerce Coffee Connection morning at 4RO Radio Station.

These mornings are always a fantastic opportunity to step away from the desk, share a coffee, and catch up with the many businesses that help keep our region moving.

Our Managing Director, Simon, also had the opportunity to be interviewed on air alongside Nyree Johnson, discussing some of the current challenges facing businesses in our local area. Topics included workforce pressures, the rising cost of doing business, and the impact of current fuel prices on local organisations, creating a very real ripple effect for many businesses.

A big thank you to the Rockhampton Chamber of Commerce and the team at 4RO Radio Station for hosting another great morning of conversation, connection and community.

New NSW WHS Code of Practice: Managing Fatigue Risks

A new NSW Code of Practice outlines how businesses can better manage fatigue-related safety risks at work.

Fatigue can affect alertness, decision-making and physical performance, increasing the likelihood of incidents, particularly in high-risk tasks such as driving or operating machinery.

The Code reinforces that employers must:

📌Identify fatigue hazards
📌Consult with workers
📌Implement practical controls
such as:
âś…Appropriate rostering
âś…Adequate breaks
âś…Supportive work design.

Read more here at Safe Work NSW:https://zurl.co/382fm

CROSS APAC encourages organisations to review the Code relevant to their state or territory and ensure fatigue risk management is addressed within existing WHS systems.

This might be of interest to some of the local businesses in the CQ area.

Domestic and family violence doesn’t stay at home.

It shows up at work as risk, disruption, and harm.

Under Australian Legislation,
psychosocial hazards are your responsibility.

That includes risks coming from outside the workplace.
Add to that:
• 10 days paid DFV leave
• Duty of care to staff
• The need for safe, informed responses

Here’s the truth:
Many small to medium businesses aren’t prepared, but are still legally responsible.

New WHS: Managing Biological Hazards at Work

Safe Work Australia has released the model Code of Practice: Managing the risks of biological hazards at work, providing practical steps to help employers protect workers and others from exposure to biological risks in the workplace.

Biological hazards such as viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi (including mould) can be present across all industries. Workers may be exposed through contact with other people, animals, contaminated materials or environments where disease-carrying vectors such as mosquitoes or ticks are present.

Under work health and safety laws, employers must take reasonably practicable steps to identify and manage these risks. The model Code outlines practical control measures that can assist organisations to meet their obligations, including maintaining clean workplaces with good air quality, providing hygiene training and supporting vaccination for preventable diseases.

For more information see Safe Work Australia: https://zurl.co/UicBl

The guidance is broad in scope and relevant to any workplace where exposure to biological hazards may occur.

CROSS APAC encourages businesses to review the Code and confirm how it applies within their relevant state or territory WHS framework, and to consider how biological risk management is addressed within their existing safety systems.

This week has been another rewarding one for the CROSS team, focused on strengthening local connections and supporting regional business growth.

We were pleased to spend time networking with fellow professionals and community stakeholders across the region, including attending the Advance Rockhampton Regional Projects Exchange. The event provided valuable insight into upcoming initiatives and opportunities that will help shape the future of our local economy.

We also enjoyed a great coffee and informal catch-up at the new Jabiru Events Centre in Yeppoon. This function centre is looking very impressive and will no doubt become a fantastic venue to host major social and business events in the Capricorn Coast area. It was a great opportunity to connect with local business operators, share ideas, and continue building meaningful working relationships.

At CROSS, we believe strong regional networks are key to sustainable business success. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with organisations and individuals who are committed to supporting our communities.

Consultation Opportunity: WHS Dispute Resolution

Safe Work Australia is seeking consultation input on possible improvements to dispute resolution processes within the model Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws.

The current framework can leave certain workplace safety disputes unresolved, which may create ongoing challenges for those involved. The consultation is exploring options that could strengthen the process, including the potential use of a specialist tribunal and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

Feedback gathered during this process will assist in developing recommendations for consideration.

Who may wish to contribute?
Safe Work Australia is inviting feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, including employers, workers, regulators, members of the public, government bodies, unions, legal practitioners, researchers and other interested parties.

How to provide feedback
The consultation paper and submission options are available through Safe Work Australia’s Consultation Hub, where responses can be provided via an online survey or written submission: https://zurl.co/xtiT3

đź—“ Submissions close: 11:59 pm (AEST) on 17 April 2026.

CROSS APAC encourages organisations and safety professionals to review the proposal and consider providing input on how workplace safety disputes may be managed in the future.

Learning, connections, and a little bit of luck along the way.

CROSS APAC and CROSS Recruit recently attended the Solace Advisory and Results Legal Seminar in Rockhampton and it was a fantastic opportunity for both professional development and local connection.

The event featured two dynamic sessions designed to deliver practical insights and fresh perspectives with key considerations around contractual law and wealth distribution and succession planning in multi-generational family businesses, providing valuable knowledge with real-world relevance for businesses and professionals alike.

A sincere thank you to the teams at Solace Advisory and Results Legal for hosting such a well-run and informative event and for continuing to invest in the capability of our local business community.

It was also great to network with other businesses on the day, share insights, and strengthen connections across the region. Events like this highlight the strength of our local professional network and the value of learning together.

And to top it off… we were thrilled to take home the lucky door prize!
A wonderful bonus to an already great event!

We appreciate every opportunity to keep learning, support local organisations, and stay connected with the people and businesses that help our region thrive.

The way work is managed is evolving and now WHS is evolving with it.

On 12 February 2026, the Work Health and Safety Amendment (Digital Work Systems) Bill 2025 (NSW) was passed by the NSW Parliament, making New South Wales the first Australian jurisdiction to specifically address the health and safety risks created by digital work systems.

This legislation recognises that technology is no longer just a business tool. If a system influences how work is allocated, monitored, measured or performed, it is now clearly part of a PCBU’s WHS responsibilities.

Digital work systems may include:
âś…Artificial intelligence and algorithms
âś…Automated rostering or task allocation
âś…Productivity and performance monitoring tools
âś…GPS tracking, surveillance or workforce management platforms

PCBUs must ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, that these systems do not create risks to health and safety, including:
🔶Excessive workloads or unrealistic performance expectations
🔶Fatigue and psychosocial hazards
🔶High-pressure or intrusive monitoring
🔶Unintended bias or harmful outcomes from automated decision-making

The amendments also allow WHS entry permit holders to request reasonable access to digital work systems when investigating a suspected WHS concern. Entry permits are issued under the WHS framework and are not limited to union representatives.

What this means for businesses:

Technology is now recognised as a work system. If it drives pace, workload, scheduling or performance expectations, it should be considered within your:

📌WHS risk assessments

📌Psychosocial hazard management

📌Worker consultation processes

📌Good work design reviews

The risks of modern work are not always physical or visible. They can sit within dashboards, algorithms and automated decisions.

At CROSS APAC, we support organisations to stay ahead of emerging WHS risks and ensure that both people and the systems that manage their work are designed for safety.

CROSS APAC | CROSS Recruit at Breakfast of Champions – Rockhampton

We had a wonderful morning representing CROSS APAC and CROSS Recruit at the Breakfast of Champions Business Connect event hosted by the Aligra Group

It was a great opportunity to step away from the desk and connect with other businesses across the region, share insights, and strengthen relationships with key players across business and local leadership. Events like these are a great reminder of the strength, collaboration, and opportunity that exists within the Central Queensland business community.

We also heard an insightful presentation from NBN Australia, the Event Partner and featured guest, who shared valuable perspectives on regional connectivity and what it means for local business productivity, resilience, and future growth.

It was lovely to spend time in conversation with Brad Johnston from My Local It Guy and Chris Harris from C.T Harris and Company , as well as connecting with Adam Belot, Mayor of Livingstone Shire, and Donna Kirkland MP, Local Member for Rockhampton.

A big thank you to Alison and Graham and the team at the Aligra Group for bringing the business community together and creating such a welcoming space for meaningful conversations and new connections.

At CROSS APAC and CROSS Recruit, we’re proud to be part of a region where collaboration, community, and local partnerships truly matter.
