Our team recently visited Greenbushes to see what it means to live alongside a large mining operation. Homes, community services, and a school are close to active mining.
We spoke with residents to understand how mining activity close to the town interacts with everyday life. The visit was part of our
commitment to our communities who deserve to be strong and healthy.

Mawarnkarra Health Service would like to let our community know that we will be closing our NDIS services at the end of our current registration period on 20 April 2026.
This includes the closure of our Plan Management and Support Coordination services.
This has been a difficult decision, made only after a great deal of consideration. Unfortunately, it is no longer financially viable for Mawarnkarra to continue operating as an NDIS provider, and continuing to do so would place our organisation under financial risk.
Our priority now is ensuring that all participants currently receiving NDIS services through Mawarnkarra are supported to transition safely to another provider. Our team will work closely with each participant to help them choose a new provider and ensure a smooth and respectful handover.
If you or someone you support is affected and has questions, please contact our NDIS team dsm@mhs.org.au
Although these services are closing, Mawarnkarra will continue to run the Remote Community Connector Program. This means we will remain committed to helping community members:
- Understand the NDIS
- Apply for the NDIS
- Connect with the right NDIS supports and providers
- Access the services they need moving forward
Supporting our community to navigate the NDIS remains a priority for us.
We thank our participants and community for their understanding and for allowing us to support them on their NDIS journey.

WHAT IS SHINGLES?
If youāve had chickenpox as a kid, you can get shingles as an adult.
Shingles is a viral infection that can be really nasty, especially if youāre over 50 or if your immune system is weak.
It can:
- cause a painful, blistering rash
- bring on sudden and intense pain that can last for months
- be very severe and impact your life
- lead to serious illness in some cases
SHIELD YOURSELF FROM SHINGLES.
The good news is, thereās a safe and effective shingles vaccine for us mob 50 years or older - and itās free!

Iām Matthew, an English Australian and a new counsellor at Mawarnkarra.
Iām here to offer a safe, non-judgmental and supportive space for anyone struggling in life. I can offer talking therapy and a way to learn new skills for managing emotional storms, or just a place to come and chat and feel heard and understood. I really hope I can have an opportunity to meet members of the community, and help people find some peace.
I was inspired to be a counsellor from my own counselling experiences when I was battling anxiety, and received warmth, steadiness and genuine care ā and I offer these same qualities from a position knowing all of us are in the same boat, rather than being the āexpertā.
Looking forward to meeting you!

Mawarnkarra was established in 1985 in Roebourne; and achieved incorporation under the Aboriginal Councils Associations Act (1976) on the 20th of March 1986.
The name āMawarnkarraā comes from the Yindjibarndi language and its meaning is translated to mean āone with power to healā. Mawarnkarra is pronounced, āMAR āWARN- GAR-DARā. In the Ngarluma language, we say, āMAR-BARN-GAR-DARā.
The Mawarnkarra symbol of the āEmuā or JARNGURNA represents the oil which is taken from the emu and is used for healing.
In 2005, the new clinic complex at Sholl Street in Roebourne, where we continue to run our service from today, was completed. Mawarnkarra also delivers some Health Programs from a separate property that is also located on Sholl Street in Roebourne.
In 2009, the incorporation status of the organisation was transferred from the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) to the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC). The service is now registered as Mawarnkarra Health Service Limited.
Mawarnkarra is the largest primary health care provider providing direct services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in the Roebourne area.
