The way we age is influenced by far more than just our genes. Every day choices we make, especially what we eat, play a vital role in how we feel, move, and function as the years go by. 🍃

Emerging science continues to highlight how certain foods and lifestyle habits can slow down biological ageing, reduce inflammation and support brain and heart health, to help us stay strong, vibrant and energised well into our later decades. 💫

In my feature article ‘Ageing Powerfully’ in the latest WellBeing 218, I explore how antioxidant-rich foods like purple berries, pomegranates, wild salmon, walnuts, turmeric, and green tea, along with key nutrients and phytochemicals such as vitamin C, omega-3s, alpha-lipoic acid, resveratrol and urolithin A, promote a longer, healthier life. I take a closer look at how these foods and protective compounds support mitochondrial health, reduce senescent cells, lower inflammation and oxidative stress, and stimulate autophagy, the body’s internal clean-up system linked to longevity and better health. 🫐

My Mexican Stuffed Sweet Potatoes with lemon yoghurt dressing + guacamole.

A colourful, nutrient-dense meal packed with fibre, plant protein, beneficial fats, antioxidants and probiotic goodness.

Legumes are nutritional powerhouses. They’re rich in plant-based protein, essential for tissue repair and muscle maintenance, and a great source of zinc to support immune function and wound healing. Their high fibre content promotes digestive health and supports balanced blood sugar levels.

Sweet potatoes provide slow-releasing complex carbohydrates that fuel the body with steady energy. They’re loaded with fibre to support gut health and rich in beta-carotene, a potent antioxidant that converts to vitamin A, essential for skin, vision, and immune health.
