I teach Pilates and Yoga classes on Russell Island and live-stream. My live-stream online and Russell Island Yoga classes include various themes for your back, hips, and shoulders to improve your balance and strength. I have a background in Hatha yoga training, Iyengar yoga, and Ashtanga. Focusing on correct alignment, breath work, and meditations in all yoga classes. My Russell Island and live online Pilates classes focus on slow and safe movements, and effective strengthening of the core area, plus lots of gentle stretches. We use resistance bands and small Pilates balls in these Pilates classes. I'm also an independent support worker

Let go of your old leaves (your resistance and hardness) to prepare for new growth, just like a tree.

How often do we say we want change, we want peace, or better life?
When we hold onto same thinking, patterns, reactions or attachments, nothing will change!

Let go of what is draining your peace.
Let go of the habits make you feel stuck.
Let go of any harmful cravings.
Let go of negative self-talk.

When we release the old, we create space for
the new, and the healing and growth begins.
Our clarity of mind returns and our true self awakens.

Are you Over 50? You need to Strengthen & Stretch your hips more!

Weak and tight hips is a common issue for over 50, which can affect your walking, cause knee and lower back issues, and increase risk of falls!

This Pilates exercise is perfect way to strengthen the important hip muscles such as the glute medius (side hip muscle) and hip flexors (front hip), plus work your other core muscles!

In this video my Pilates members are demonstrating wide leg raises with resistance band.

Tips:
1. Keep head/shoulders on ground if you have neck/shoulder issues.
2. Pilates beginners can perform this exercise without the resistance band.
3. Beginners can start with half movements.
4. Avoid arching lower back on ground.
5. Move slowly & smoothly & engage core.
6. Don’t forget to do your slow diaphragm Breathing!
7. Use a pillow under head if neck-shoulders are tight.

It’s time to slow down

🍁 Autumn Yoga 🍁

🍁Time to let go of our old layers, like trees let go of their leaves in Autumn.
🍁Time to slow down and be gentle.
🍁Time to nourish your mind & body.

My Top 3 yoga poses for Autumn are:

1. Puppy with twist: Pillow under head. Top arm either bent, straight or placed behind back.
2. Supported Fish pose: Pillow under head when your neck/shoulders/upper back is tight. Choose either bent legs, straight or butterfly.
3. Legs-up-the-wall: Optional bolster under hips. Legs can be close or wide.

Hold each pose for 2-3 minutes.

Our mind & body can feel unbalanced during Autumn season. Good time to let go of what is no longer nourishing you and boost your immune system.

Why Strengthen your glutes?

It’s important to strengthen your glutes (buttock muscles) when we get older to reduce lower back, hip and knee issues.

Strong glutes help support your spine, prevent injuries, stabilise your hips, improve your posture and walking.
Plus can shape-up the buttocks 😀

Key exercises to strengthen the buttocks are:
Bridges
Squats
Lunges
Clams
Deadlifts

Let’s talk about bridges

🌟BEGINNERS: Keep both feet on ground and lift hips and hold (traditional bridge).
Engage your core and breathe.

🌟One-leg bridge tips:
Keep hips level & stable.
Press heel on ground evenly.
Engage your core & move slowly.

🌟Try this resistance band exercise for 15-20 reps on each leg.

(Don’t do one-leg bridges if there’s lower back, hip, knee issues)

Yoga bolster stretches for your lower back and hips.

💜This is my favourite short yoga sequence for hips and lower back using a bolster.

Using a bolster (or folded blankets), under the hips provides support and allows for deeper stretches.

Setup: Place bolster or folder blankets under your lower back/top of hips.
🌟Video 1: Start with wide knee rolls slowly for around 1 minute or longer.

🌟Video 2: Hold single knee to chest for 1-2 minutes. You can bend straight leg if you are tight or have sensitive lower back.

🌟Video 3: Elevate the legs and hold 2-3minutes. You can place your legs against the wall for more restorative.
Perfect way to improve circulation!

Always allow the breath to guide you. Slow, gentle breaths for deeper release.
You can do anytime of the day.

🌟Squats with a ball🌟

Squats are number one exercise for aging!

What are the benefits of performing squats with ball between thighs?

1. Improves technique
2. Fires up your core
3. Joint-friendly for knees & hips
4. Inner thighs work more

Squats are great for strengthening legs, hips, core, & muscles around the knees.
Plus squats indirectly strengthen our bones (reduce Osteo).

🌟Important tips:
Beginner can use a wall for back support.
Use good breathing technique (slow, even breaths).
Engage your core.
Bend at hips first (imagine you are sitting back on a chair).
Press feet evenly & avoid lifting heels off floor.

🌟Variations:
Can hold hand weights for more resistance.
Hold longer (20s-2+min).
Can use a yoga block between thighs.

Sleeping Deer Pose

Also known as reclining Deer pose. This is a
Restorative hip opener, twist and forward bend.

Perfect Autumn yoga pose to Practise to help you let go, destress, and feel grounded.🌺

Steps:
1. Start with sitting with one leg bent Infront and other leg bent to side. 90/90 degree bend at hips & knees. Sit on a blanket/pillow if hips/knees are tight.
2. Place your bolster/blankets next to side hip and gently twist from your belly to face your bolster.
3. Slowly fold forwards and turn head to face same side as knees. You can place a pillow under head for more support.

ACTIVATES:
Root chakra, Sacral chakra and solar plexus. Liver & gall bladder meridians.

Releases PSOAS hip flexor, lower and middle back muscles and promotes deep relaxation.

Hold between 2-5 minutes each side and breathe slowly and evenly.

Remember your breathe will guide you and nourish you 💜

I’m demonstrating a gentle variation of supportive fish pose using a blanket under my upper back.
