As part of Parkinson’s Awareness Month, we welcomed clients living with Parkinson’s and their carers to Royal Rehab Ryde for an afternoon focused on sharing experiences, building understanding, and connecting with others in the Parkinson’s community.

Parkinson's NSW CEO, Mary Kay Walker, introduced the session with an overview of the newly launched National Parkinson’s Action Plan, a national framework aimed at improving awareness, access to care, research, and support for people living with Parkinson’s. From there, Alice, our Speech Pathologist, spoke about swallowing changes associated with Parkinson’s and led a discussion where clients shared their experiences, offering insight into day to day life with the condition.

We finished with a PD Warrior session, bringing everyone together through guided movement focused on supporting mobility and confidence.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today and showed their support for the Parkinson’s community.

Today we remember.

On Anzac Day, we honour those who served with courage and integrity, and we reflect on the cost of war, the lives lost, the families changed, and the histories that continue to shape us.

Lest we forget.

At the launch of Back on My Feet at Royal Rehab Ryde today, we heard from author Dr Olivia Ong.

She spoke as both a rehabilitation doctor and someone who has lived through a catastrophic spinal cord injury. Not just the clinical side, but what it actually takes to keep going when life shifts so dramatically.

Hearing her talk about self-compassion, self-appreciation and celebrating the small wins, didn’t feel like a “message”, it felt lived. It is the kind of perspective that stays with you, whether you are in recovery or going through difficult times.

If you missed it, Olivia will be speaking again at the Royal Rehab Foundation Giving Lunch on 15th May. It’s well worth being there, for her story and for what the event helps make possible.

Today is World Parkinson’s Day.

At Royal Rehab Group, we’re thinking of everyone living with Parkinson’s, and the families and friends who support them.

We see the determination it takes to keep adapting and doing the things that matter, even as life changes.

Parkinson’s affects everyone differently, but the right support at the right time can make a real difference.

We’re proud to walk alongside people through rehabilitation and care, helping them stay connected to their goals, independence and life.

To the Parkinson’s community, we see you.

Dr Olivia Ong in conversation with Royal Rehab Group CEO Matt Mackay.

After a catastrophic accident, Olivia was told she would never walk again. The future she had imagined seemed to slip away. What followed were years of intensive rehabilitation and therapy.

Along the way, Olivia discovered the power of self-compassion, gaining strength and a deeper understanding of the healing process.

From doctor to patient and back again, she reflects on recovery, resilience, and rebuilding a life.

Her story is for anyone facing a challenge that feels insurmountable, and a reminder that even in the toughest times, it’s possible to find a way forward.

Join us on 15 April at 12:30 pm at Royal Rehab Ryde.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and for us, it’s personal.

We see every day what it really looks like to live with Parkinson’s. The small wins that mean everything. The determination it takes to keep going, even when things change.

Parkinson’s can affect movement and daily life, but it never defines the person. The people we work with are strong, capable, and so much more than a diagnosis.

To our patients and clients, we’re with you. Not just for the big milestones, but for the everyday moments that matter.

And to the families walking alongside you, your support, patience, and love make all the difference.

A few moments from the 2026 BrightSky Australian Pro Adaptive Surf Championships award ceremony.

Such a fabulous night. So much love in the room and such a strong sense of community.

It’s been a big week and special to be part of.

Huge thanks to everyone who made it happen, and especially to the athletes. The effort, resilience and grit on show all week was something else.

We’re already looking forward to next year.

Our Story

Royal Rehab is led by an experienced and specialised team dedicated to maximising the life skills, abilities and independence of people living with a disability.

Founded in 1899 through a visionary act of philanthropy, Royal Rehab was formed to give hope, comfort and connection to hospital patients discharged as “incurable”, often with no family, money or ability to work.

Today, more than 100 years on, Royal Rehab continues to lead the way in clinical, research and teaching excellence and person-centred rehabilitation and disability support.

Royal Rehab’s innovative projects, programs and services employs a model of rehabilitation that takes recovery beyond the traditional clinical environment and integrates it with activities in everyday life to promote community participation and independence.
