Port Stephens Suicide Prevention
Network is a registered charity that has been operating for over 16yrs, we support mental health in our community, building awareness of
suicide and its impacts and strengthen
community resilience and wellbeing. Committee members meet to discuss activities and potential projects to keep our community safe..........Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network exists with the generosity and support of the community. Photos and videos show people working together creating a dedicated Solace place This work has opened up many conversations about suicidal thoughts as the park is also a place where dogs can run without a leash so many enjoy sitting on the seats and watching companion dogs enjoying their freedom. . The network subsidises Wesley Suicide Prevention and Lifeline A.S.I.S.T training programs to teach people how to respond better to a person contemplating suicide. Before Covid disadvantaged students from the local High school, supervised by trained teachers and residents, helped with landscaping and maintaining the park and the kids open up in conversations around suicide as they work. . . We can’t make suicide go away but we do know many people have been helped just by being able to talk about their inner demons in a friendly, non judgmental environment

Join us for a 2-Day Mental Health First Aid Course proudly sponsored by Port Stephens Council and the Port Stephens Su***de Prevention Network, delivered by Wesley Mission.

This training will provide our frontline communities members the tools to offer immediate, concrete support to lessen factors that contribute to poor mental health.

This practical course will give you the knowledge and skills to support someone experiencing:

Ben Besant - Guest Speaker at Remembrance Walk 13 September Iluka Reserve Boat Harbour - 9:00am.

Ben Besant who served with the New South Wales Police Tactical Operations Unit and a member of the team that dealt with the Lindt Cafe Siege, will be the guest speaker at the Port Stephens Su***de Prevention Remembrance Walk at Iluka Reserve Boat Harbour on Saturday 13 September at 9:00am. Ben's story of the mental health challenges associated with his job and his efforts to overcome them is an inspiring one for all of us who struggle at times with our mental wellbeing. Come along and join in on the Remembrance Walk and have a chat to Ben.

Participants will have increased confidence in their ability to identify people who may be at risk of su***de, communicate appropriately with a suicidal person, ask a person if they are considering su***de and conduct a su***de intervention.

Our Story

Port Stephens is a caring community with a commitment to su***de prevention and to reducing the impact su***de has on communities.

First community forum was 27th March 2008,when 45 people gathered and acknowledged concerns about su***de in the local community. The forum aimed to identify what is already being done to support those who are vulnerable in the area and discuss what else can be done to address this important community issue.

The issues and concerns raised at the forum were:

· Vulnerable people/groups in the community

· Local Su***de data & research

· Needs of people/family effected by su***de

· Community Issues

· Local Support Services, Resources and related issues

PORT Stephens Su***de Prevention Network was formed to work with existing services, address the systemic and structural issues such as lack of resources, gaps in service provision and delivery; look at community needs.

· To raise awareness that there is an issue of su***de in the community and develop su***de prevention strategies in the community.

· To identify available local resource and to know about su***de prevention.

· To bring in services that aren’t available and strives to ensure those affected by su***de have support services.
