Dear Non-Swifties,
I extend this message to you with a sincere intention to *try* and shed light on the remarkable essence and influence of the collective passion of Swiftie culture (through my experience).
While acknowledging the weighty issues that confront our world, I urge you to recognise the profound significance of this cultural phenomenon.
As a Psychologist and a parent to a Swiftie tween, I've had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the profound impact of Taylor Swift's music in fostering connections that transcend mere appreciation for catchy tunes.
My family and I were lucky enough to secure tickets to her first Australian show, on Friday night at the MCG with 96,000 people; an experience that left an unforgettable imprint on our hearts.
Before the concert, for weeks (and I’m sure months for some), friends and families engaged in activities that emphasised the anticipation and communal spirit surrounding the event, from crafting friendship bracelets to immersing ourselves in Taylor's music.
It became evident that this collective experience wasn't solely about the melodies; it was about forging bonds and sharing in a sense of belonging.
Even for those who may not consider themselves devoted fans, what I experienced was that Taylor's concert possessed an innate appeal that captivates audiences and fosters a sense of shared euphoria.
I watched as people, initially skeptical or indifferent, celebrate in the infectious energy of the performance, united by the music and the palpable sense of camaraderie.
As a parent, I've witnessed the transformative power of Taylor Swift's music in providing solace and upliftment to my tween during moments of joy and adversity alike. Her melodies have served as a beacon of comfort, offering a break from life's trials and reaffirming the importance of connection in navigating the human experience.
So, to all the non-Swifties among us - when you scroll through your socials wanting to roll your eyes, because who cares, right? I urge you to pause and refrain from bagging this phenomenon as trivial amongst the myriad of global issues.
Yes, these concerts will not create world peace. Yes, people are living within atrocities.
But, it is possible to have empathy and compassion for others without having to blow out our own candles of happiness.
As humans we have the ability to feel conflicting emotions about different things, at the same time.
So let’s allow people the joy and excitement this brings so many!
This isn't about differences of genre, political affiliations, religious beliefs, or the ravages of conflict. Rather, it underscores the profound significance of connection, an elemental aspect of the human condition that exceeds barriers and improves our lives immeasurably.
In a world often set apart by division and discord, let us not overlook the power of music to unite and uplift, serving as a testament to our shared humanity. As we navigate the complexities of life, may we embrace the magic of music and cherish the moments of joy and connection it affords us.
As an avid concert-goer, this one just hit different and I’m so grateful we could be part of the experience.
With heartfelt regards,
A converted Swiftie Mum, to Swiftie.
