What Actually Happens in a Gait Analysis and Why It Matters

Whether you’re dealing with a niggling injury, increasing your activity levels, or simply want to move more efficiently, your gait (the way you walk or run) plays a huge role in how your body feels.

At Bayside Sports Podiatry, gait analysis is one of the most important parts of your assessment because it helps us understand how your body is moving and why certain tissues may be overloaded.

Race Day vs Recovery – The Other Side of the Marathon

On Sunday, Rhys smashed the Melbourne Marathon with a 2.40 hour finish!

As both a podiatrist and distance runner, he knows first-hand that what happens after the race is just as important as what happens on course.

Recovery starts the moment you cross the finish line — from hydration and nutrition to rest, footwear, and gentle mobility.

Rhys shares his top post-marathon recovery tips:
✅ Walking only this week – wear the most comfortable pair of runners in your shoe rotation for this, and consider your choice of shoes for work to enhance recovery (not too flat, cushioned midsole, forefoot width)
✅ Prioritise sleep — your body rebuilds while you rest
✅ Maintain good nutrition to aid muscle repair and recovery and hydrate consistently
✅ Manage any toenail trauma or foot blistering promptly by seeing a Podiatrist

👣 Meet Nicki Quigley – Podiatrist & Founder, Bayside Sports Podiatry

Nicki Quigley brings over 20 years of experience in clinical podiatry and sports medicine to the Bayside community.

Nicki is highly regarded for her expertise in the assessment, diagnosis and management of lower limb and foot injuries, drawing on her background in biomechanics and exercise science to provide tailored, evidence-based care for every patient.

Alongside her work at Bayside Sports Podiatry, Nicki has been the Podiatrist for the Hawthorn Football Club since 2005. Her experience spans a wide range of elite sports — including AFL, athletics, tennis, soccer, cricket and netball — giving her a deep understanding of movement, performance and rehabilitation at all levels.

Passionate about helping people stay active, Nicki works with everyone from junior athletes to adults managing long-term injuries, ensuring each treatment plan supports their goals and lifestyle.

A long-time Bayside resident, Nicki enjoys playing cricket, spending time with her husband and two teenage children, and making the most of the healthy, active lifestyle she helps her patients return to.
