Just because your pain has stopped, doesn’t mean the work is done 💡⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When an injury occurs, your movement, strength, balance and overall function are affected.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Sometimes problems in these areas have actually contributed to your injury 🤷🏻‍♀️⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When you are recovering from an injury we need to restore these areas through exercise and lifestyle changes so you can return to the activities you love. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 that injury from coming back is just as important!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So even when your pain stops, keep doing the work. Keep getting stronger. Keep moving better, so you can feel better.⁣⁣

Have you heard of dry needling but aren’t really sure what it is? Here’s the 411...⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘳𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨?⁣⁣
Dry needling is a treatment method that can reduce muscle tension and pain. A very thin needle is inserted into the muscle and local twitch response is obtained (feels a little like a muscle cramp)⁣

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘥𝘳𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘰?⁣⁣
With the GEMt-method of dry needling, we aim to achieve a local twitch response in the muscle, followed my muscle relaxation. Once the trigger points in a muscle have been deactivated, you may feel a reduction in pain and tension and may be able to move better. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝘐𝘴 𝘥𝘳𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘶𝘭?⁣⁣
The twitch response feels similar to a muscle cramp, which may be uncomfortable. However, because the needle is so thin many of my patients don’t even feel the needle! (You have to zoom in super close to even see it!)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Some of the common areas I treat with Dry Needling are:⁣⁣
- hip flexors⁣⁣
- calves⁣⁣
- hamstrings⁣⁣
- shoulders and neck⁣⁣
- low back⁣⁣
- quads⁣⁣
- forearms, biceps and triceps⁣⁣

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month 💛⁣

Endometriosis occurs in 1 in 10 people with uteruses (Jean Hailes). ⁣

Early diagnosis and treatment is key, however many people don’t get a diagnosis for up to 7-10 years (Jean Hailes). ⁣

We hear so many stories about people seeking help, only to have their pain dismissed as “normal period pain”. ⁣

From an osteopathic perspective, we can:⁣
💫 address tightness and pain in the low back, hips, pelvis and legs⁣
💫support the nervous system⁣
💫manage the body’s stress response to pain⁣
💫prescribe exercise and movement⁣
💫collaborate with other health professionals to support your health and wellbeing⁣

If you’re experiencing endometriosis-associated pain, Osteopathy may help. ⁣

Is your weightlifting belt doing more harm than good? 💭⁣

Weightlifting belts have an appropriate time and place. Wearing them around the gym for your entire session is not that (even if your fitness idols do). ⁣

The purpose of a belt is to increase intra-abdominal pressure to stabilise the spine during heavy lifts so you can lift more.⁣

When this pressure increases, the only way it can go is down 👇🏼. Onto the pelvic floor. Weakening it. ⁣

A weak pelvic floor can lead to sexual dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence for all genders. ⁣

So it’s incredibly important to use a belt correctly and safely so we decrease the risk of these things occurring. ⁣

Here are my top tips for using a weightlifting belt correctly:⁣

• if you wear a weightlifting belt, ensure you have learnt how to brace correctly. Don’t just throw it on and hope for the best. ⁣

• Weigh up the benefits and costs: is my belt going to make enough of a difference that it outweighs the risk?⁣

• If you’re experiencing bladder or bowel leakage when you train, it’s not normal. I strongly encourage you to speak to a health professional. ⁣

• Book a consult to assess the health of your pelvic floor. You may require a pelvic floor exercise program to minimise the impacts of the weightlifting belt. ⁣

What you do today sets you up for the rest of your life. Prevention is key 🔑 ⁣

There’s 168 hours in a week. The average Osteo appointment is 30 minutes. So what are you doing for the other 167.5 hours in the week?⁣

If you keep repeating the behaviours that contributed to your pain, you won’t see progress. ⁣

If you don’t strengthen what needs to be strengthened, you won’t see progress. ⁣

If you don’t move what needs to move, you won’t see progress. ⁣

The work you do outside the treatment room is just as important as what we do inside it. ⁣

Sports tape - what’s the deal?⁣

These are two commonly used tapes: rigid tape (usually brown) and K-tape (usually colorful or patterned)⁣

Rigid tape is used to provide stability to joint as it has next to no stretch. It is preferably only left on for short periods, such as games, competitions or training and is useful in return to sports after sprains or dislocations. ⁣

Kinesiology tape is far stretchier and allows you to move normally (great for dancers and gymnasts). It may be beneficial in improving pain, swelling and performance. K-tape can stay on for 3-7 days and is fine in the shower, during swimming and sweating. ⁣

Both tapes can be used virtually anywhere, except sensitive areas of course, and are a great complement to hands on treatment and exercise rehab💪🏼 ⁣

“You need to stop doing (insert sport here) because it’s why you’re injured”⁣

Have you been told that before?⁣

It’s a cop out.⁣

Yes, maybe you experience pain during the sport or activity. But it’s not the activity itself causing it. ⁣

Muscle imbalance, less-than-ideal mobility & incorrect technique are all causes of pain and injury we see time and time again. ⁣

We need to address these root causes to solve the problem. And to do this, you have to 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦.⁣

After all, movement is medicine⁣
